To all whom may concern:
a I in Be it known that l, bar/rum; Wanner, a citizen of the United. States, and a resident of Rutherford, county of Bergenfand Etate' of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lleadwear, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements ir headwear and in particular to caps wherein provision is made for the ready adjustment pend upon additional elements for desired adjustments.
With the foregoing objects in view, my invention consists in the features of con struction and arrangements of parts hereinafter described, particularly pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompany ingF drawing, in which:
. igure 1 is a side view of a cap embodying one form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view showing the use of an auxiliary flap and the incorporation therein of a part of the fastening device.
Fig. 3 is asection on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1, showing the construction of the fastening device and the application thereof to the cap material, and
Fig. a shows the pattern used in making the cap and the method of providing for the auxiliary flaps.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which like reference numerals represent like parts, designates generally a cap comprising a body portion ll made of cloth or any suitable flexible material and a visor 19; secured thereto in the usual man ner. The body portion 11 is preferably media of a single piece of material as illus trated in Fig. at and is formed to comprise ll-shaped notches the edges of which,
- when brought together and sewn, give the div it required shape to said body portion, present a smooth surface and, unless closely inspected, are imperceptible. 'li'he body portion ll is as at to form he lit 5 lb and i7, at apposite the can at. he th it as body pertain t-ll'lf are made slightly longer than the flaps 17 in order to cover the edge 19* of the latter and to present a smooth edge when the cap is completed, and, in any adjusted position.
Auxiliary flaps 20, conforming substantially to the shape of the flaps 16 are sewed on the under side thereof as illustrated by the dotted lines 21 in Fig. d. The flaps d0 may be large enough to underlie slightly the flaps ll'.
'lhe flaps l? are perforated adjacent their edges wand, for convenience of illustration, three holes 21, 22 and 23 are shown in said flap, it being understood however that any number of perforations desired can be used. The corners of the flaps 16 are perforated as at at, for a purpose which will be hereinafter explained.
The fastening devices consist of members and 26 respectively, the members all comprising button-headed externally threaded shanlrs, the heads thereof preferably being covered with the same material as that of which the cap body is made. The members 26 compriseinternally threaded sleeves having perforated flanged portions, the latter of which are adapted to be sewn to the cap material.
Fig. 2, shows the flaps l6 and 17 turned back to expose flap 20, to the corner of which is sewn the member 26. The method of ad justing the size of the cap is to turn down the flap 17 and draw it forwardly until the sleeve on member 26 engages the desired opening; then the flap 16 is turned down over the flap 17, the opening 24 in the former being engaged by said sleeve. The member 25 is then screwed into member 26 and holds the flaps in superposed relation and adjusted position.
Although l have shown and described 1 ips at opposite g a pocket to receive lid lllli 'L ed with a series of the apertured flap and a fastening having 2.- A cap having a slit in the edge thereof to enable adjustment of the cap to various head sizes and provided at one sideof said slit with a flap having a series of openings and at the opposite side of the slit with double flaps forming a pocket to receive the apertured flap and a fastening having disconnectible complemental parts extending from the double flaps through selected openings in the apertured flap.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of March, 1921.
SAMUEL WERNER.
