GAS VALVE PROTECTOR Filed Feb. 9. 1929 vweutoz Abraham Meade [son 3am Pearl Patented May 2t}, 193% STAFF.
, ABRAHAM MENDELSON, OF YARDVILLE, NEW JERSEY, AND SAM LYN, NEW YORK PEARL, or BROOK.-
GAS-VALVE inorncroa This invention relates generally to protectors and has more particular reference to a novel gas valve protector for gas ranges.
The invention has for an object the provision of a device of the class mentioned which is of simple durable construction desirable in use and 'eflicient in action and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
The invention proposes the use of a cover member of sheet metal having a pair of flat plates connected at right angles to each other and arranged for covering and shielding the valves of a gas range. An angle support has one of its arms adjustably secured upon the inner side of one of the said flat plates and the other of its arms arranged parallel with the other of the said flat plates. Clamp arms arranged on one'side of the second mentioned arm of the support angle coact with second clamp arms arranged on the other side of the said arm, and clamp screws engage the clamp arms for securing the same upon the gas supply pipe of the gas valves of the gas range. In one position of the cover member one of the flat plates extends over the tops of the gas valves while the other extends across the front sides and shields the valves against operation. The cover member may be swung through an angle ofv 90 about the gas supply pipe as a pivot so that the gas valves are acce'ssible for use.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various features of the invention are more particu larly set forth. 4
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure V Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a gas range provided with a protector construoted according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view with the protector shown in an inoperative position.
- Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional'view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 4 4i of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 5-is a side elevational view of the gas vzalve protector, per se, seen from the inner The reference numeral 10 indicates generally a gas range of any design or construction provided with a gas supply pipe 11 having jet control valves 12. A gas valve protector 13 is supported upon the. gas supply pipe 11 and covers the valves 12 against manipulations. In Fig. 2 the gas valve protector 13 is shown in a second position hereafter known as its inoperative position in which the gas valves are accessible for use.
The gas valve protector 13 consists of a cover member of sheet metal having a pair of flat plates 14 and 15 connected at right angles with each other. Preferably these flat plates are integral with each other and joined by a curved portion 16. angle sup port has one of its arms 17 adjustably secured upon the fiat plate 14 on the inner side thereof, and extends along the longitudinal length of the cover member to small distances from the ends thereof as seen in Fig. 5, and its other arm 18 parallel to and spaced from the fiat plate 15. a
A clamp arm 19'is positioned so that its top end engages against one side of the in ner arm 18, and the lower portion of the clamp-arm partially encircles the gas supply pipe 11. A second clamparm 20 has its top end engaged on the opposite side of the angle arm 18 and slightly above the top of the clamp arm 19, and has its bottom end partially encircling the gas 85 supply pipe 11.- The outer end of the clamp arm 19 is formed with a reduced portion 21 engaging in an aperture 22 formed in the outer end of the second clamp arm 20 so that the clamp arms are pivotally connected. A 99 clamp screw 23- passes through an aperture in the clamp arm 19 and threadly engages the clamp arm 20 for forcing the arms together against the angle arm 18 and the gas supply pipe 11. An auxiliary clamp screw 24 thread edly engages through the clamp arm 20 and abuts against the gas sup-ply pipe 11 for holding the clamp arms against rotation about the said gas supply pipe.
The longitudinal edges of the flat plates 14 and 15 are turned inwards for providing finished edges as indicated by reference numerals 25. The transverse edges of the same plates are also turned in as indicated by numerals 26 for the same purpose. The longitudinal edge of the angle arm 18 is turned in as indicated by numeral 27 finishing this edge. This arrangement prevents possible cutting of persons engaging against the edges of the device.
Studs 28 project from the inner side of the flat plate 14: and engage through elongated slots 29 formed in the angle arm 17. Ning nuts 30 engage upon the studs 28 for clamping the angle support arms in transverse adjusted positions on the flat plate 14. The wing nuts 30 may be loosened so that the cover member may be relatively moved trans versely with respect to the angle support and then secured in its new position for better fitting the cover upon gas ranges constructed according to slightly different dimensions.
In operation of the device the clamping screws 23 and 24 may be securely engaged for holding the cover member so that the fiat plate 14 extends over the tops of the gas valves while the fiat plate 15 extends across the front sides of the valves. This condition of the device is illustrated in 3. It is pointed out that with the device in this condition the gas valves may not be opened either purposely or accidentally by children knowingly or unknowingly and possibly prevent accidental asphyxiation. Further animals such as ats, also are prevented. from turning the valves on. The clamping screws 23 and 24 may be slightly loosened and the device pivoted about the supply pipe 11 thru an angle of 90 to a position as shown in Fig. 4. In this position the gas valves may be turned open as indicated by dot and dash lines 31. The various parts used in the construction of the device may be nickel plated to add to its attractive qualities.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity, I realize that in practice various alterations therein may be made. I therefor reserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of the correlated parts without departing from the spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
