UNTTED STATES FLORENCE A. SHAFER, OF LOS ANG-E-LES, CALIFORNIA.
SUPPORTER FOR PLUMES FOR HEADWEAR AND OTHER PURPOSES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 1, 1911.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912. Serial No. 618,479.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORENCE A. SHAFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented and discovered a new and useful Improvement in Supporters for Plumes for Headwear and other Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in supporters for plumes for headwear and other purposes and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide means for adjusting supporters for plumes without weakening the stem of the plume, as has heretofore been done, the method in use prior to my invention perforates the stem of the plume thereby weakening the same; second, to save labor in preparing the means used by my improvement in stifl'ening and supporting the stems of plumes; and, third, to more quickly adjust plumes in positions desired upon hats and other articles which the plumes are designed to ornament.
This invention consists essentially in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully described in the specification, shown upon the drawing appended hereto and specifically pointed out in the claims made a part hereof.
I attain these objects by the construction and arrangement of the several parts illustrated upon the accompanying drawing, in
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my improved plume supporter, the plume se cured at one end to the front of the hat, the clamping portion of the supporter fastened to the stem of the plume, and the wire portion of the supporter secured at one end to the clamping portion and the other end thereof secured to the crown of the hat; Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the clamping portion of my supporter, having a part of the wire portion thereof fastened to the clamping portion and a part of the said wire portion broken away; Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the clamping portion of my improved supporter, as shown upon Fig. 2 of the drawing, with the said wire portion thereof removed; Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of a modified form of my preferred form of clamping portion of my supporter, illustrated upon Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing having a part of the said wire portion of the supporter secured thereto at one end and the opposite end of said wire portion broken away; Fig. 5 is a view in perspective of the modified form of the clamping portion of my supporter as shown upon Fig. 4 of the drawing with the wire portion of the supporter removed.
Similar reference numerals, letters and characters, refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
The reference numeral, 1, designates a hat, the numeral 2 refers to the crown of the hat to which my improved supporters for plumes are designed to be applied.
The numeral 3 indicates the stem of the plume, 4, the enlarged end of the stem, 3, being secured at 3, as shown upon Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The numeral 5 denotes my preferred form of the clamping portion of my improved supporter shown attached to about the longitudinal center of the stem, 3, of the plume, 4, as illustrated upon Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The reference numeral 6 designates the wire portion of my supporter, one end of which is passed through the jaws, 7 and 8, as shown upon Fig. 2 of the drawing; the said jaws preferably consist of a single piece of metal, 9, bent upon itself, as illustrated upon Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 5 of the drawing; the free ends of the said metal strip being bent at right angles to the body portion thereof at 9 and having their edges serrated as illustrated, at 9, as shown upon the drawmg.
The reference numeral 12 denotes my preferred form of bolt illustrated upon Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, and the numeral 12 denotes a modified form of clamping bolt for compressing and releasing the jaws, 7 and 8, of the clamp shown upon Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing. The preferred form of said bolt is shown upon Figs. 2 and 3 as passed through the jaws, 7 and 8, and bent upon itself and passed upwardly through an opening, 10, in the lower jaw, 8, of the clamp, asillustrated upon Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing.
The modified form of clamping bolt, 12, as shown upon Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing, passes through openings 10, 16 in the jaws 7 and 8 of the clamp; the said bolt,
12, being provided at one end with a slotted head, 12", as shown upon the said last two.
mentioned figures of the drawing, 4: and 5. The upper end of said bolt being screwthreaded adapted to receive a milled edge screw-threaded nut, 13, by means of which the said jaws of the clamp, 7 and 8, in both forms of my improved clamp, are securely fastened to any portion of thestem, 3, of the plume, 4, that may be desired, and the free end of the wire portion, 6, being se cured, as hereinbefore mentioned, to the crown of the hat at 6, as illustrated upon Fig. 1 of the drawing. generally artistic can hide the stitches by which the free end of the wire portion, 6, is attached to the crown of the hat, by means of a bow, G, partly broken away, illustrated upon Fig. 1 of the drawing.
It is obvious that many variations and changes in the details of construction of my improvement may readily be made by persons skilled in the art to which this invention relates, and still be within the scope of my improvement.
I do not to the specific construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and reserve to myself the right to make all changes in, and modifications of the same, as come within the spirit of this invention; but I do desire to secure as my invention all features of construction and equivalents thereof as come within the scope of my improvement, as herein shown and described and illustrated upon the drawings appended hereto.
ably fixed to one Milliners who are desire to confine this invention Iclaim:
1. A supporter for plumes comprising a clamping portion provided with jaws having serrated ends adapted to hold the stem of plumes, and an adjusting bolt, removof the jaws of the said clamping portion, the opposite end of said bolt being screw-threaded to receive the clamping nutfor compressing and releasing the jaws of the said clamping portion from the stem of the plume; the said wire portion removably fastened at one end to the said clamping portion and the opposite end thereof removably secured to the article which the plume is adapted to ornament.
2. A supporter for plumes comprising a clamp provided with jaws adapted to be adjustably secured to the stem of the plume, the said ends of the clamp being serrated, a clamping bolt, screw-threaded at one end and the opposite end thereof removably .fastened to one of the jaws of the clamp, a
screw-threaded nut adapted to adjust the jaws of the clamp to stem of the plume, the wire portion of the supporter removably fastened to one of the jaws of the clamp at one end thereof and the opposite end of the said wire removably secured to the article which the plume is designed to ornament.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FLORENCE A. SHAFER.
