Description

Jan. 3, 1933. i GRANT, JR 1,893,409
ELECTRIC LAMP GUARD Filed Feb. 15, 1932 INVENTOR ATTOR N EY Patented Jan, 3, 1933 UNITED STATES ROBERT LEE GRANT, JR, 0E rnxanmnnnxnnsns, ssienon: 'ro "BESSIE. soo'r'r BOISSEAU GRANT, or TEXARKANA,ARKANSAS ELECTRIC LAMP strait n The invention relates to an electric light bulb guard and more particularly to a com bined guard and light shade for electric light bulbs.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein on the mounting thereof upon an electric light socket same will serve to protect the bulb and also will function as a shade for the light issued by the bulb, the device being adjustable to vary the shading of the light at the option of the user of such device.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein a shading shutter is movably supported in a novel manner within the guard of a semibulbous reflector so that on adjustment of the shutter the light rays from'a bulb of the electric type can be shut off or diminished accordingly to the requirement of the user of the light, the device in its entirety being of novel form.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which constitutes an attachment or appliance for use with an electric light bulb socket so that an electric bulb when fitted therein or carried thereby will be protected or shielded and the light therefrom controlled or regulated for shading purposes, the parts of the device being assembled in a unique and novel manner.
A further object of provision of a device of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purposes, neat in appearance, readily and easily mounted upon and removed from an electric bulb socket, strong, durable, easy of adjustment and fully protective for a bulb and also inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and
having a light bulb therein the the invention is the pointed outin the claim hereunto appendedl V In'the accompany ng drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of an electric light bulb socket showingthe device'constructed in accordance with the invention appliedthereto. V a
Figure2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the device removed from the socket and the same in shifted position. V j
' Figure 3 is a top plan view thereof. Similar reference characters indicate cor'- responding parts throughout the several views in the drawing. 1 Referring to the drawing in detail, vA designates generally an electric light bulb socket of any standard construction and B the light bulb fitted therein, this bulb being of the usual type. upon and'carried'by the socket A is the guard constituting the present invention and here inafter fully described. v I The guard comprises a semi-bulbous shaped reflector or body member 5 having an open side 6 through which issues the light from the bulb B. This reflector or body member 5 at its smaller end hasa semi-circu lar band 7 bridging theopen side 6 and this band with the companion portion of the member 5 constitutes a circular or annular track 8 for guide rollers 9 upon a semi-bulbous shaped shutter or closure 10 for the open side 6 of said reflector or member 5, the
Adapted to be mounted latter being rotatably pivoted at 11 to the said reflector or member 5 while the rollers are pivoted to the said shutter to project laterally onto the track and travel upon the same on adjustment of the shutter. Superposed or spaced with relation to the track 8 is an annular or circular retaining ring or band 12 which holds the rollers engaged with the track 8. Uniting the ring or band 12 with the track 8 is a series of straps 13 and 14 respectively, these being joined with said track 8 in any suitable manner.
The straps 13 and 14 have outbent intermediate portions 15 which provide a clearance for the rollers 9' so as not to interfere with the travel thereof upon the track 8. I
The straps let are extended upwardly beyond the ring or band 12 and are joined with a split ring-like clamp 16 which is adapted to embrace the socket A and is made firm or fast thereon by a nut carrying bolt or fastener 17 so that the guard will be mounted upon the socket A in proper position to permit the inclosing 'ofthe bulb B and thus guardand protect the same.
In the use of the device when it is desired to shade the light issuing from the bulb B the shutter 10 is-manually turned, thus reducing the size of the open side 5 and in this fashion regulating the light from the bulb as should be clearly obvious. When the shutter 10 is completely closed it will obliterate the light rays from the bulb B and thus shut off the light therefrom. I
The shutter 10 is fittedWithin the reflector or member 5 and its axis of movement is upon the pivot 11 for the opening and closing action thereof, While the rollers 9 guide such shutter when traveling upon the track 8 as will be obvious.
What is claimed is An electric lamp guard comprising a pair of semi bulbous shaped members, one swingingly movable into the other andthe other constituting a stationary reflector, spaced bands on the stationary reflectorand one constitut ing a track and the other a retainer, straps spacing said bands and having intermediate outbent portions, rollers carried by the swinging member and engaged between the bands and operative upon said track, a pivot connecting the members remote from the bands and a clamp integrally formed With certain of said straps and adapted to embrace an electric light bulb for the securing of the reflector thereto. I
I In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
