Application filedMarch 31, 1919. Serial No. 286,352. 1
To all whom it mag concern This invention relates to a lock for securing the removable cover to the body of a refiled January 4, 1918.
ceptacle and is an improvement on the lock shown in apphcation Serial No. 210,394,
The object of this invention is to provide a device for the purpose described which is easy to operate; cheap in construction and which securely holds or looks the cover in position on the body of the receptacle against any jarringof the receptacle.
The means by which I'attain the object above set forth includes a' flat locl ing-mem-' her which is pivotally secured to the body of the receptacle and frictionally held in any rotated position by a spring-member. The cover is provided with a circular opening in which the locking-member is closely received in the closed position of the cover to thereby hold the cover in such position. The cover is provided with a slot extended from the bottom edge to the opening therein which, when the flat locking-member is turned into one position permits the cover to be moved into closed position and the locking-member to thereby enter the opening. The lockingmember is thereupon rotated in saidopening to such a position'that its edges engage the. walls of the opening and removal of the cover is thereby prevented.
Figure 1 is a front view of a receptacle embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail of the cover and body of the receptacle with the cover in partially closed position and with the locking-member rotated into a position to enter the opening in the cover. i
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail along lines 3S of Fig. 2. r
Fig. 1 is a detail of the cover in closed position on the body of the receptacle and with the locking-member received in the opening in the cover and with the locking-member rotated into locking position.
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail along lines 55' of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the friction. washer for the locking-member.
As here shown the receptacle'to which my inventlon is applied comprises the body-pen tlon 10 and the cover 11. The cover is formed with a down-turnededge-portion 12 adapted to fit closely over the body-portion 10 in the closed position oftheicoven' The locking-member comprises a flat strip having a locking-portion 141 and the integral reduced or bearing-portion 15.. An opening 16 is formed through the wall of the bodyportion near the top thereof and within-that portion covered by the downturned edgeportion 12 of the cover in the closed position Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N 29" 1921, 1
thereof and the reduced or hearing portion i 15 of the locking-member is rotatable there- .in. Said bearing-portion 15 is of such a length as to extend beyond the inner face of I the wall of the body-portion l0 and a spring member comprising the concave spring-disk 17 having a slotted periphery thereby to provide a plurality of spring-fingers 17 is ar- 7 ranged thereover and secured tn'ereto as by the upsetting of the end of the bearing-men ber. The tension-member is for the purpose of drawing the shoulder formed at the junction of the locking and bearing portions of the locking-memberinto firm frictional on gagement with the body portion 10 thereby v to frictionally retain said locking-member in any rotated position against any unintentional displacement therefrom, yet permit ting it to be rotated, and also firmly to hold itin extended position from the body-portion. The large diameter ofthe friction member with its bearing with the wall of he receptacle at its periphery materially assists in providing this result. It is obvious, however, that any suitable means to accomplish this result may be employed.
The down-turned edge-portion 12 of the cover, is formed with a substantially circular opening 18 therethrough which, in
the closed position of the cover, is adapted to be substantially concentric with the pivotal axis of the locking-member. Said open conforms to the edges of the locking-portion of'the flat locking-member, whereby,- when said member is rotated to a horizontal position shown in.Figs. 4L and 5, or to a position inclined away from the vertical, the walls of the opening will engage the edges of the locking-member and further movement of the cover toward an open position will be prevented.
With the c0ver;in closed position the locking-member is'adapted to be rotated from the vertical position into a position inclined trom'the vertical, as in 'Fig. 4,
inwhi'chposition the edges of the lockingmember engage'tne walls of the opening and prevent removal of the cover. The lock ing-member is frictionally retained in any adjusted position; by the springmember and consequently will hold the cover closed until it is rotated into adjustinent with the slot 19, whereupon the cover may be moved away from the body of the receptacle;
It is to be noted that, by the provision of the substantially circularlocking openmember which is closely received therein,
against movement in either direction.
I claim- A receptacle having a body-portion and 7a cover having a side-wall depending down over a side-wall ,of the body-portion, the cover side-wall having a circular lock-meniber receiving aperture therethrough and a slot having a width less than the diameter of said aperture extended from the lower edge of the side-wall to said aperture-arranged to admit a lock-member within said aperture,the side-wall of said body-portion having'a smaller aperture alined with the aperture inrsaid cover, and a lock-member for said cover and body-portion comprising a flat strip having a width approximately equal to the diameter of the circular aperture and a thickness less than the width of said slot and extended beyond the side-wall of the cover, said strip having a reduced portion rotatably received in theaperture in the side wallof the body-portion and extended inwardly beyond said side-wall,
and a spring-plate received on said extended e L reduced portion arrangedtopress said strip 4 against the sidewall, said extended reduced portion formed with an enlarged inner end porti0n arranged to retain said spring-platein place. 7 In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses;
GEORGE A. BURNHAM,
Witnesses V T. T. GREENWOOD, H. B. DAVIS.
