CLOTH-ROLL GRIP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTER S. MAGEE, citizen of the United States, residing at Bath, in the county of Aiken and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cloth-Roll Grips, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to accessories in cloth manufacture and particularly to a cloth grip to be mounted in each end of a loom roller to assist in rolling the cloth evenly on said roller.

Heretofore in weaving cotton cloth in particular the cloth has been wound upon a smooth round iron rod or roller. The jar and vibration incident to all looms caused the cloth to loosen on the roller and slide to one end or the other thereof where said cloth rubbed against the loom frame. As a result the selvage of the cloth became soiled with oil and grease, thereby materially damaging the first few yards on every roll of cloth produced. Furthermore, repeated trouble was caused by slack selvage. This resulted when the roll of cloth changed position or slid to one end of the roller, thereby causing one selvage of the cloth to wind tight on the roller while the other end overlapped the end of the roller in folds and wound slack. This uneven winding result ing in slack selvage alone caused quite an appreciable loss of cloth on each loom. The cloth grip of this invention eliminates these faulty features and enables the cloth to be wound evenly and smoothly on the roller.

This invention further aims to provide a metal cloth grip which may be easily mounted on the rollers now in use without materially altering said rollers.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable and efficient device of this character, which is easily and cheaply manufactured and readily attached to looms now in use.

Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.

The accompanying drawing shows a cloth grip or roller-engaging clip I mounted on one end of a roller R on which the winding of the cloth is taking place. The barrel or body 1 of the grip is substantially tubular in cross section so as to embrace and fit closely about the roller R. One side of the barrel 1 is preferably left open or split as at 2 to give resiliency to the device and one end of the side opposite the opening 2 is preferably extended to form a cloth engaging finger 3 arcuate in cross section, which narrows slightly toward its free end and has the corners 4: rounded to prevent turning of the cloth. The corners 5 at the opening 2 are also rounded for the same purpose.

At some point in the periphery of the barrel 1, preferably where the finger extension occurs, is a longitudinal slot 6 adapted to engage a locking pin 7 in the roller R, thus preventing rotation of the device on the roller and also permitting the grip to slide longitudinally of the roller R within the prescribed limits of the slot 6, so that the finger 3 may be withdrawn from engagement with the cloth C whenthe roll is completed.

In using the cloth grip, it is placed on one end of a loom roller with the finger pointing inwardly, the resiliency of the grip permitting it to be sprung over the pin 7 until said pin engages the walls of the slot 6. The grip is thus prevented from rotating on the roller but may be easily slid out thereon within the limits of the slot 6 so that the cloth C may be wound perhaps once around the roller in a reverse direction to the operating rotation thereof. The grip is thereafter slid inwardly on the roller and if necessary the finger 3 is slightly sprung the cloth. It

will be seen that the cloth passes under, then back over the finger 3 so that when the roller rotates the cloth is held securely thereon, each successive wind of the fabric winding on evenly and smoothly over the preceding one since there is no possibility of the cloth slipping on the roller. On the completion of the roll of cloth, the grip on the end thereof, being resilient, may be sprung up over the pin '7 and removed from the roller if desired. Attention is called to the fact that the grip on the end of the roller further acts as a stop to the cloth.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

l. The combination with a cloth roller provided with a pin near the end thereof, of a resilient, open-sided roller embracing barrel having a slot formed therein, and a cloth engaging finger formed on the barrel, said pin being adapted to fit in the slotof the barrel.

2. The combination with a cloth roller provided with a pin'near the end thereof, of a cloth grip embodying a resilient tubular body having an open side and provided with a slot, and a cloth engaging finger formed on the tubular body, said grip being adapted to embrace the roller with the slot in engagement with the pin.
