To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, FRANK M. MORTON and VILLIAM H. DISMUKE, citizens of the United States, residing at Phoenix city, in the county of Lee and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slippers or Muzzles for Drawing-on Machines for Drawing Roll- Covers; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and-use the same.

This invention relates to an improved slipper or muzzle to be used on what is known as the drawing 011 machine for putting covers on spinning frame rollers.

The object of the invention is to provide improved clamping means for holding the removable fingers of a muzzle in proper position.

"With this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a slipper or muzzle constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, Fig. 8 is a transverse section; Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the head. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a drawing on machine showing this improved muzzle applied.

In the embodiment illustrated, a body portion 1 is shown comprising a base plate 2 having a tubular extension 3 and oppositely extending apertured lugs or ears as 1 arranged on opposite sides of said extension with the apertures therein screw threaded to receive connecting rods 5 and 6. This cylindrical extension 3 has a smooth inner bore and is provided on its outer face with spaced annular ribs 7 and 8 preferably located near its opposite ends and each being provided with spaced recesses or notches as 9 and 10 respectively, to receive the spring fingers as 11. An annular shoulder 12 is arranged at the base of the tubular extension 3 below the rib 7 and is designed to form a stop for limiting the inward movement of the fingers 11. This extension is also provided with a laterally extending Specification of Letters Patent.

A split clamping sleeve 1& encircles the tubular extension 3 and is preferably made of a width corresponding to the length of said extension and is provided on its inner face with annular shoulders 15 and 16 arranged in position to engage the outer edges of the annular ribs 7 and 8 when the parts are assembled to prevent longitudinal movement of said sleeve relative to said extension. This split sleeve 14 has outwardly projecting laterally extending apertured ears 17 and 18 at its opposite ends, the aperture in one of said ears being screw threaded to receive a clamping screw or bolt 19 preferably provided with an angular head to facilitate the screwing and unscrewing thereof to tighten or loosen the sleeve, said bolt when applied having its headed end arranged to bear against outer face of the ear having the unthreaded aperture. This sleeve is provided with a recess or notch 20 preferably formed in its lower edge at a point opposite its split portion. This recess 20 is adapted to fit over the stop pin 13 on the extension 3 and hold the clamping sleeve against rotation during the tightening or loosening operation.

It will be readily understood that after the fingers 11 have been inserted in the notches 9 and 10 of the ribs 7 and 8 and the sleeve 14 disposed therearound the screwing or unscrewing of the bolt 19 will operate to tighten or loosen said sleeve and vary its tension on the fingers 11.

In the use of this improved muzzle, it is connected with a drawing on machine 25 of any suitable construction, preferably by passing the connecting rods 5 and 6 through apertured lugs as 26 and securing them in position by set screws as 27. The roller cover or cop (not shown) is then drawn on over the fingers 11 of the muzzle and the machine is operated to force a roller 28 through the muzzle into the cover which is constructed to fit said roller closely.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
