WIRE-STRETCHER BLOCK.

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SUTHER- LAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Pend Oreille and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretcher Blocks, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved stretcher block for use in guiding and holding the ends and for also securing one end of a wire when the latter is being drawn tightly around a wooden pipe, a mold, or other object and especially adapted for use in connection with the wire stretching device for which Letters-Patent of the United States No. 1,154,27 5 were granted to me September 21, 1915.
The invention consists in a stretcher block having wire guiding and holding openings and also having wire securing channels and fulcrum heads as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wire stretcher block constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention, and showing the same in use in connection with one of my before mentioned wire stretching dev1ces.

Fig. 4 is a detailed end elevation of the same.
My improved stretcher block 1 is made of steel, iron or other suitable material and has a concave inner face 2 adapting the same to fit on an object such as a wooden pipe or the like around which wire is to be stretched and drawn. The block is provided with a pair of longitudinally extending bores or openings 3 which are oppositely inclined and each of which has one end arranged near the inner side of the block and nearly midway between the sides of the block and has the other end arranged near one side and also near the outer side of the block. Oppositely inclined channels 4: are also made in opposite sides of the block and each of which is substantially parallel with the proximate bore or opening 3. Each channel is open as at 5 at one end of the block and is also open as at 6 at theouter side of the block and at a point about midway between the ends of the block. On the outer side of the block at the ends thereof are transversely arranged semi-cylindrical shoulders 7 One end of each shoulder forming one side of one of the channels 4.
The operation of my improved stretcher block is as follows: The block is placed on top of the wooden pipe or other work around which the wire is to be drawn and tightened and the wire when placed around the work, in wraps, as shown, has its end portions passed through the oppositely inclined openings 3. One end of the wire is I grasped and drawn by the wire stretching device A, hereinbefore mentioned, the head 8 of the wire stretching device bearing against one end of the stretcher block and with the out-turned lip 9 bearing on the flange or shoulder 7 of the block. The other end of the wire is reversely. turned and is arranged and held in one of the channels 6 so that said end of the wire is secured to the block. The block with its engaged rounded shoulder or flange 7 at the end a ainst which the head of the stretching evice bears forms the fulcrum for the said stretching device and greatly facilitates the use of the same in stretching the wire and binding the same firmly around the work. It will be understood that only one of the channels will be used at a time. Two of the channels are provided and are arranged in opposite sides of the block so that the latter is rendered reversible and either end of the block may be used as a fulcrum for the stretching device.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A stretcher block having wire guide 0 e ings extending therethrough from end to end, said openings being oppositely inclined and arranged in intersecting planes, said block having transversely arranged fulcrum shon ldersat its outer side, at the ends, and being also provided in opposite sides With oppositely inclined channels each channel being open at one end of the block and being also open at the outer side of the block at a point intermediate the ends of the block In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
