Description

July 1.7, 1923.
F. WALKER sIpiiwG TIGHTENER Filed Aug. 24 1921 [Qt enter FRED 14 211122? fly Alla/127 Patented July 17, 1923.
FRED WALKER, OF NEEPAWA, MANITOBA, CANADA.
SIDING TIGHTENER.
Application filed August 24, 1921.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED WALKER, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Neepawa, in the county of Portage la Prairie and Province of Manitoba, D0- minion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Siding Tighteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tighteners and is particularly adapted for tightening tongue and groove lumber.
The object of my invention is to provide a tightener provided with a member for engaging the side-of the lumber, and a cooperating member adapted to engage a support, which members when tightened will draw the lumber together.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing one method of operating thetighteners.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing another method of operating my tighteners.
Referring to the drawings, like numerals designate like parts in the various drawings.
Referring to Fig. 1, I provide a set of gripping members 8 and 9 having their respective handles 10 and 11. The portion between the gripping member and the handles are hingedly connected by the bolt 12.
The gripping member 9 is provided with bifurcated end 14 adapted to fit over the ordinary tongue formed on tongue and groove lumber.
Serial No. 494,776.
In this construction Fig. 1, shows the gripping member 8 positioned in the end of the scantling 15, while the end 14 is engaged in the tongue of the piece of lumber desired to be tightened against the previously laid plece. In Fig. 2, the gripping member 8 spikes into a temporary support on brace 16 abutting against a wall so that pressure can be exerted in drawing the boards together.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction of my invention will be clearly understood, and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What I claim as new is:
Tighteners consisting of gripping members, handles attached to said gripping members, said gripping members hingedly connected together, one of said gripping members being provided with a bifurcated end portion so formed as to receive and embrace the tongue portion of the tongue and groove member without injuring the said tongue, one of said gripping members adapted to engage the face of a tongue and grooved board for tightening the same against the previously laid board and the other of said gripping members adapted to engage in any suitable support either above or below the board to be acted upon so that pressure can be exerted to tighten said boards together.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED WALKER.
