To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that. I, \VILLIAM W. BLACK- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marblehill, in the county of Pickens and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail Seats or Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates toa rail seat or brace adapted to directlyseat the rail and be fastened to the ordinary tie.
It is aimed to provide a generally improved and more eiiic-ient construction having novel separable sections to facilitat attachment and detachment and a construction which will save undue wear on the wooden ties; which prevents the rails from spreading or getting out of gauge; which will hold the tie straight; which will not work loose and which will generally add to the security of fastening of the rail.
The invention has been embodied in one form as illustrated in accompanying drawings.
In said drawings Figure 1 is a view taken transversely of the rail and showing the same in place on a tie and through the use of my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the parts of Figure 1 Figure 3 is a fragmentary View similar to Figure 2 but taken either from the opposite side or the same side of the tie at the other end thereof; and
Figures a and 5 are detail perspective views of the sections of the seat or chair.
In practice, the invention essentially comprises separable sections A and B as respectively shown. in detail in Figures 4: and 5. These sections are preferably made from a suitable metal and in any desired size.
Section A consists essentially of a bar or plate havii1g openings 10 therethrough to accommodate spikes 10, used to secure it rigidly to a tie 11. Likewise sectionB consists of a bar or plate having holes 12 therethrough similar to holes 10 and adapted to receive spikes 1 1 therethrough and be se cured to the tie 11.
At the rail side, section A is thickened or enlarged at 15 and has a diagonally disposed mortise 16 extending completely therethrough. A slot 17 extends from the adjacent end of section A through the morties and completely across the section except for a web or abutment 18. Said end of section A at the-upper portion thereof is undercut at 19 in order to provide a railretaining flange 20. This flange 20 extends at a right angle to longitudinal median line of the section A. i
Section B has an undercut rail retaining flange 21 intermediate its ends. A rail C adapted to seat on the section B on the side of flange 21 opposite to the spike holes 10 and to be engaged andheld in place by the flanges 20 and 21. The portion of section B on which the rail 0 rests is designated 22. The free end of the rest 22 is provided with a tenon adapted to slide into and occupy the mortise 16 and slot 17 and which consists of a neck 24 to occupy the slot 17 and an enlarged head 25 adapted to occupy th mortise 16. The head 25 is disposed at the same angle as the mortise 16 and thus as the sections A and B are connected together by sliding movement of one relative to the other, the flanges 20 and 21 are brought into clamping engagement with the opposite sides of the base flanges of the rail C. Also, the neck 24 is preferably cutaway or notched as at 26 in order that a portion of the head as at 27 will form a projection adapted to be retained in the mortise by the web 18, and which web is accommodated in the cutaway portion or notch 26.
It will be understood that in use, the sections A and B, either'loose or with one of them attached to the tie 11, as preferred, are connected together by sliding one section transversely relativ to the other so that the mortise 16 and slot 17 will receive the neck 21 and head 25. The flanges 20 and 21 bind against the opposite sides of the base flanges of the rail and displacement of the sections prevented by the web 18 overlappingv the projection 27. Thereafter, both sections A and B or the section not heretofore fastened to the tie 11 is adapted to be fastened to that tie by the-driving of spikes or other fastenings through the holes provided through the sections.
The improvement may be used to any extent desired. That is to say, it may be used at each end of each tie or it may be used as a repair device, that is one being used on the tie when it becomes worn at the point where the rail is fastened thereto, or it may be used at locations Where rails independently spread out of alinement.
\Vhen the devices are used two to a tie, that is one for each rail, they are reversed in position, for instance as in Figure 1 at one end and as in F igure 3 at the other end so that if the ties tend to move they will tighten the braces to the rails due to the opposed angularity of tenons 27.
Various changes in the details may be resorted to provided they fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. A. rail chair having sections, means on the sections to hold the rail, 21 tenon on one of the sections, the other section having a mortise to receive said tenon, said tenon having a projecting portion, and the latter section having means into which said projeoting portion extends.
2. A rail chair having sections, said sections having rail retaining flanges, one of the sections having an inclined mortise therethrough and a slot leading from the mortise to the adjacent end of the section, a Web in said slot, the other section having a tenon adapted to enter said slot and said mortise, the latter section being cut away at its longer side inwardly of and adjacent the tenon, and said Web being adapted for accommodation in said cutaway portion.
3. A rail chair having sections provided with means to engage the rail, one of these sections having a tenon obliquely disposed and fitted in a mortise of the other section, and the latter section at its longer side having a projection to engage the side of the other section adjacent the tenon.
