. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OLE ANDERSON, OF OCEAN CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO SAMUEL i S. WENZELL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
,' STRAP TIGHTENER AND FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,857, dated June 14, 1904. Application filed .l'uly 17, 1903. Serial No. 166.0245. (N model.)
To all ZIJ/1.0711 it may concern.-
fastener; and a further Objectis to permit of adjustment of the same to different positions in respect to the strap without interference with the proper operation of the parts wheref by the tightening and securing of the strap is effected. These objects I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to theaccompanyingdrawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved strap tightener and fastener applied to the strap and secured in position thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar View, but showing the parts of the fastener released from each other and adjusted to position for engaging the strap prior to the tightening of the same; and Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view ofthe fastener on the line a d, Fig. l.
The deviceV comprises two members, which may for convenience be termed the xed member and the movable member. The fixed member comprises opposite side plates 1 1, a transverse connecting-plate 2, and transverse connecting-bars 3 and 11, one located near eachend of the side plates. The movable member consists of opposite sideplates 5, transverse connecting- plates 6 and 7, and a transverse bar 8, said side plates 5 of the movable member being pivoted to the transverse bar 3 of the fixed member.
Hung to a transverse rod or pin 9, carried by the side plates 5 of the movable member of the fastener, is a lever 10, with projecting rib 11 at its forward end, and projecting upwardly from the transverse plate 2 of the fixed member of the fastening device is a post 12, notched or recessed at one side for engagement with a swinging bolt 13, which isl pivoted to the plate 7 of the movable member of the fastening and is acted upon by a` spring 14., tending to move it into engagement with the recessed face of the post 12.
One end of the strap 15, to which the device is applied, is connected to a loop 16, and the other end of said strap is passed around the bar 4 of the fixed member .of the fastening, thence behind the transverse plate 2 of the same, thence around the bar 3, thence through theI loop 16, thence between the edge of the plate 6 and the lever 1()4 of' the movable member of the fastening, bar 8 of the latter, and thence outwardly over the strap, where it passes around the bar 4. When the bolt 13 is released from engagement with the post 12, the movable member Vof the fastening can be raised, as shown in Fig. 2, and the strap 15 can thenlbe drawn as tight as possible by hand preparatory to dethence behind the pressing the lever 10 so as to cause it to engage with the strap, whereupon by swinging `down the movable member of thefastening,
as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, said strap will' be tightened by the lever action of said swinging member, and by a succession of such swinging movements a succession of tightening operations will result until the desired tension has been imparted to the strap, where upon the movable member of the fastener can be fully depressed, so as to cause the bolt 13 to engage with the notched post or keeper 12, and thereby lock the movable member of the fastening in the position shown in Fig. 1 and prevent any slackening of the strap.
It will be observed that my improved fastening device is threaded upon one end of the strap and can therefore be adjusted thereupon to any desired position before beginning to tighten the strap. Hence in applying the fastener to a trunk-strap the same can be readily adjusted so as to occupy a position between the longitudinal stifening bars or strips with which trunks are usually provided.
In order to effect the release of the bolt 13 from the notched bolt or keeper 12, saidfbolt may be pushed laterally out of engagement with the keeper by means of a pin 16 or other formed in the side bars of the two members of the fastening, these openings registering with each other when the said members of the fastening are in the closed position. (Shown in Fig. p
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination or' a strap, looped at comprising a relatively lixed portion and a lever pivoted thereto and engaging said looped end, said relatively fixed portion being threaded upon said-looped end of the strap and adj ustable longitudinally in respect thereto, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of a strap, looped at one end around a connection at the opposite end of the strap, and a strap tighten er and fastener comprising a relatively fixed portion and I a lever pivoted thereto and engaging said looped end, said relatively Iixed portion being threaded upon said looped end ot' the strap and adjustable longitudinally in respect thereto, substantially as speciied.
3. The combination or' a strap, looped at one end, and a strap tightener and fastener comprising a fixed member threaded upon said looped endof the strap and adjustable longitudinally in respect thereto, and a movable member pivoted to the ixed member and carrying a clamping-lever for engaging the free end of said looped member of the strap, substantially as speciied.
4. A strap tightener and fastener consisting of a fixed member comprising opposite side plates and transverse rods, one near each end of said plates, and a movable member. comprising side plates hung to one of said transverse rods of the fixed member, a transverse strap-bearing, and a clamping-lever whereby the strap may be confined against the end of said transverse bearing, substantially as specified.
5. A strap tightener and fastener comprising a fixed mem ber having opposite side plates with transverse connecting-plate and transverse rods one near each end of said side plates, a movable member comprising side plates pivoted to one of said transverse rods, a transverse strap-bearing and a pivoted lever serving as a clamp for the strap, a notched post projecting from the transverse plate of the tixedinember, and a pivoted and spring-actuated bolt carried by the movable member and adapted to engage said notched post when the two members of the fastening are closed, substantially as specified.
6. The kcombination in a strap tightener and fastener, of a xed member, and a movable member pivoted thereto so as to swing thereon, a notched post or keeper on one of said members, and a pivoted and spring-actuated swinging bolt on the other member for engagement with said keeper, said members having therein openings which register with each other when the members are closed and permit entrance of a key whereby the swinging bolt can be released from the keeper, substantially as specified. Y
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this speciication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
