BUCKLE FOR TIE-STRAPS.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1914.
Application led January 27, 1914. Serial N o. 814,750.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD J. USHEA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burnham, in the county of MiiHin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certaln new and useful Improvements in Buckles for Tie-Straps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in tie straps designed for` use upon mail bags and receptacles of various kinds and the object in view is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature which will form a simple and secure device for quickly tying and securely holding the receptacle.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 is an edge view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a strap or band having a staple B projecting therefrom and a buckle E is fastened to one end of the band and which hasy pivotally connected thereto the hasp F. Said hasp is bent at right angles to a point designated in the drawings by letter H, forming an offset or shoulder and from the shoulder to the free end of the hasp the latter is contracted and provided with a slot I. A loop, designated by letter N, is fastened to the opposite end of the strap or band and through which the contracted portion of the hasp is adapted to pass, said loop being designed to engage the shoulder on the latter preparatory to the hasp being swung to the position shown in Fig. l of the drawings, thus giving a suiiicient leverage to draw the strap taut. When the hasp is in closed relation, the staple passes through the slot therein and any fastening means may be passed through the staple to securely hold the hasp in place.
By the provision of a device embodying the features of my invention, it will be noted that a simple and eiiicient means is provided whereby the ends of the straps may be drawn taut by the toggle action intermediate the strap with the shoulder thereon which is engaged by the loop upon the opposite end of the strap, the latter being pulled taut as the hasp swings to a closed position.
What I claim to be new is A fastener for mail bags, etc., comprising a strap, a buckle fastened to each end of the strap, the buckles being of different widths, a lever pivoted to the free edge of the wider of the two buckles and extending the width thereof, said lever having a contracted portion which at its inner end is bent at right angles forming a shoulder, designed to receive the free edge of the narrower buckle, and forming means whereby, as the lever is swung upon its pivot, the strap will be drawn taut and the narrower of the two buckles brought into engagement with the outer face of the lever intermediate its shouldered portion and the pivotal end thereof, and means for holding the lever in a locked position, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
