ANIMAL-HOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 24, 1910.
Patented Aug. 8, 1911.
serial No. 599,087.
To all lwhom 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MARVIN E. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Esbon, in the county of Jewell and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Animal-Holding Devices, of which the following is a specication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,
This invention is an improved device for holding an animal, especially for holding a horse for shoeing or for treatment and being also adapted for other similar uses, the invention consisting in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is partly an elevation and partly a sectional view of an animal holding device constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of one end of the device.
In accordance with my invention I provide a stock 1 which is provided with a pair of longitudinal bores 2, 3 which extend therethrough from end to end. One end of the stock, which I will term the inner end, is hollowed or concaved as at 4 to adapt it to fit against one side, say of the nose of a horse or other animal. The outer end of the stock is provided at that portion thereof through which the bore 3 extends with a shoulder 5.
A screw 6 is movable longitudinally in, for engaging, the bore 2 and on the said screw is a hand wheel the hub of which forms a nut 8 which engages the thread of the screw and bears against the outer end of the stock. A rope 9 has one end disposed in the bore 2 and connected to the inner end of the screw 6. A loop or bight 10 is formed in the rope and the other end of the rope passes through the bore 3. A spring catch 11 which comprises an arm 12 and an arm 13 at right angles thereto is secured with its arm 12 bearing on the shoulder 5 of the stock and its arm 13 on one side of the stock and opening outwardly therefrom to enable the free end of the rope to be caught between the free. outer end of the side arm 13 and the opposing side of the stock and thereby secured at any desired adjustment as indicated in Fig. 1. It will be understood that the bight of the rope may be readily tightened around the nose of the animal and that the rope may be secured by engaging the same with the spring catch 11. If it be desired to tighten the rope around the nose of the animal this may be readily done by turning the hand wheel 7 so as to cause the end thereof to coact with the threads of the screw and drawing thescrew 6 outwardly and thereby increase the tension on t-he bight or loop of the rope.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is The herein described animal holding device comprising a stock having a shoulder at its outer end and also having a pair of bores extending longitudinally therethrough from end to end, a screw movable longitudinally in one of the bores, but out of threaded engagement therewith, a hand wheel on the screw, a nut engaging the screw and bearing against the outer end of the stock at a point to one side of the'shoulder, a rope attached to the screw, having a bight portion at the inner end of the stock, and being also passed through the other bore of the stock, and a spring catch on the stockat the outer end thereof, said catch having an arm bearing on the shoulder and provided with an opening through which the rope extends, and also having an arm at one side of and opening outwardly from the stock, to enable the free end of the rope to be caught between the last mentioned arm, and the opposing side of the stock.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MARVIN E. NELSON. Witnesses Gr. T. ROSE, O. D. Honors.
