This invention relates to tattin'g shuttles and has for an object the provision of a shuttle embodying means for supporting the tatting thread for convenient use by the oporator or user.
Another object of this invention is to provide a tatting shuttle in which the tatting thread may be readily wound on its bobbin, and the operating means being adapted to be folded to and from operative position or to be folded within the general contour of the shuttle.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a tatting shuttle of generally improved construction, whereby the device will be simple, durable and inexpensive in construction, as well as convenient, practical, serviceable and efiicient in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in the preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawings wherein I Figure 1 is an elevational view of the improved tatting shuttle, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the present invention, there are provided opposed side members 1, one of which has a longitudinal slot 13 formed therein. A tubular shaft or post 2 is secured between the side members and has rotatably mounted thereon a bobbin or spool which comprises an intermediatetubular portion 3 thereof. The tubular portion 3 has its opposite ends formed with flanges which are round in elevation and one of these flanges is toothed to mesh with the gear 7 that is secured to a stub shaft 8 Specification of Letters Patent.

which is rotatably mounted in a suitable bearing 9, which, is in turn supported by the slotted side member 1.
Pivotally secured to the outer termilfial of the stub shaft 8 is a crank 10 havinga knob or manipulating finger 12 extending from the free endthereof, Any suitable means may be provided for attaching the thread to the spool or bobbin and, in the present instance, there is provided a resilient hook 1-1- which is secured to the intermediate tubular portion 3 of the said bobbin. In practical operation, the thread is read- 11y secured to the bobbin, after which, rotary motion is imparted to the bobbin by simply rotating the crank 10. This movement will rotate the stub shaft 8 and gear 7 and consequently impart the desired rotary motion to the entire spool, since its toothed flange 6 is in mesh with the gear 7. After a suflicient quantity of thread has been wound upon the bobbin, the crank 10 is swung about its pivot 11 until it is housed within the longitudinal slot 13. In this position, the knob or manipulating finger 12 is also received within one terminal of the tubular shaft 2; therefore, providing a shuttle of uninterrupted contour.
It is manifest that this shuttle may be advantageously employed in tatting, or other functions to which this device may be adapted, since no obstructions extend beyond the outer face of the side pieces 1, thus enabling it to be readily inserted through the meshes of the formed material. The operator is, also, enabled to maintain the proper thread tension, because when the crank or rotating member 10 is moved to inoperative position within the longitudinal slot 13, then the entire bobbin is locked against rotation, and consequently, prevents the thread from being inadvertently drawn from the bobbin.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new is p 1. A shuttle including side pieces, a transverse shaft secured-between the said side pieces, a bobbin rotatably mounted on the shaft and comprising an intermediate tubular portion and spaced flanges, one of the said flanges being toothed, a bearing member supported by one of the side pieces, a stub shaft rotatably mounted in the said bearing member, a gear secured to the stub shaft and adapted to operably engage the toothed flange of the bobbin, a crank pivried by the bobbin and adapted to secure the thread to the said bobbin.
