Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GUSTAV Anew BER- THOLI), a subject of the King of Saxony, residing at Chemnitz, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Binding the Skeins 011 Reels, of which the following is a specification.
This new device is clearly shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section through the reel 1, 2, 3 with the new mechanism superimposed; Fig. 2 is a front view there of; Fig. 3 shows a small portion of Figs. 1 and 2, to wit, the so-called ring-shuttle, on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4 is a front view of the ring shuttle; finally Figs. 5 to 9 are diagrams intended to show and explain how and in what manner the new device is to be employed.
The reel 1, 2, 3 consists of a well-known device composed of a hollow shaft 1 with the arms 2 attached thereto, and to these arms there are attached the bars 3. Fig. 2 merely shows a short portion of the reel. For the expert it is hardly necessary to add that the reel 1, 2, 3 is fairly long and that several such systems of arms 2, as shown in Fig. 1 are mounted on the shaft 1 at predetermined distances in order to carry the long bars 3.
In Figs. 1 and 2 several skeins of yarn 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 are shown wound upon the reel.
Now the purpose of the new device consists in that the aforesaid skeins 4, 5, 6 10 in Fig. 5 are to be joined, that is to say bound together, in suchwise that they cannot get entangled but will remain side by side in well-ordered layers. This binding of the skeins on the reel was in olden times, and is still largely to-day, effected by the W0rk-girls by hand. Certain mechanical devices to effect this are already known and they bind the skeins automatically. The new device, forming the subject matter of the present invention, is also such an automatic binding device, but it possesses the advantage of great simplicity in comparison with the arrangements already known. The principle of this device consists in that the ring shuttle 12, shown in Figs. 3, 4, winds the binding thread 11 around the several individual skeins 4, 5, 6 10 in the manner clearly shown in Figs. 6 to 9.
In Fig. 2 the shuttle 12 is shown in the position ready to commence work. As will be hereinafter explained the mechanism can be lowered, so that the shuttle 12 will engage with both its ends between the skcins 4, 5, 6.
Fig. 6 shows the moment at which the shuttle 12 has been lowered and has turned in the direction of the arrow 13. The thread 11, which can be drawn through the hole 14- out of the interior of the shuttle 12, has been cast around the first skein 4.
Fig. 7 shows the moment at which the shuttle 12, after completing a full revolution, has again been raised upward and occupies precisely the same position as in Fig. 2. In the next moment the shuttle 12 is moved forward in the direction of the arrow 15, Fig. 8, to such an extent that it no longer stands over skein 4 but over skein 5. The shuttle is then again lowered and turned in the direction of the arrow 13. This moment is shown in Fig. 9. The shuttle winds its thread-around the second skein 3, and the working process must now be imagined to proceed in the same manner as here inbefore described, until the shuttle has wound its thread 11 around all the skeins 4, 5, 6 10 as clearly shown in Fig. 5. In Fig. 5, furthermore, it can also clearly be seen that the two ends of the binding thread 11 are to be joined together by means of a knot 15. This knot 15 can be made either with the human fingers or by means of any automatic device of a suitable kind.
A description shall now be given of that mechanism which serves to impart to the shuttle 12 that operative movement elucidated by means of Figs. 5 to 9.
As shown in Fig. 4 the shuttle 12 is hollow inside, and in the said hollow there lies a spool 16 bent into a curved shape. The thread 11 coming from the spool 16 passes out externally through the hole 14. On the external periphery of the shuttle there are drilled several holes 17. In the frame of the machine, which is not shown in the drawing, the shaft 18 (Figs. 1, 2) is mounted in suchwise that it can be turned backward and forward and also be moved longitudinally to and fro. The arms 19, and the arms 20, are mounted on the shaft 18 at certain distances from each other. The arms 19 serve as hearings to a shaft 2].. To each arm 20 there is fastened a bearingcase 22, wherein the shuttle 12 and two cogwheels 23, 24 are so mounted as to be able to rotate. The cogs of the two wheels 23,
24 are shaped like short pins which engage with the holes 17 (Figs. 3, 4) on the periphery of the shuttle. In the bearing case 22 the shaft 25 is also so mounted as to be able to rotate, and to it there are attached two bevel-wheels. The teeth of these bevelwheels 26 engage with the teeth of the bevelwheels 27. Each of the two bevel-wheels 27 is firmly connected to one of the two cogwheels 23, 24:. Hence if the shaft 25 be turned backward and forward the wheels 26, 27, 23, 24 must also be turned backward and forward, and in this way the shuttle 12 also acquires its movement. To the shaft 21 there is attached a mechanism 27, 28, 29 which serves to hold fast the end of the thread 11.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:
l. A device for binding the skeins while separated on a reel, comprising a shaft, arms mounted on said shaft, a shaft 21 mounted on said arms, a bearing case, a shuttle and two cog wheels mounted in said case, the cogs of said wheels engaging in holes in the periphery of said shuttle, a shaft 25 mounted in said case, two bevel gears on said shaft 25 to engage with said cog wheels whereby said shuttle is made to rotate as described. 2. A device for binding the skeins while separated on a reel comprising a ring shuttle provided with thread, and means to rotate said shuttle while being traversed across said reel, whereby the shuttle thread is wound around said skeins, as described.
3. A device for binding the skeins while separated on a reel comprising a ring shuttle provided with thread, a shaft 18, spaced arms mounted thereon, a shaft 21 having bearings on said arms, a bearing case, a shuttle and cog wheels rotatable in said case, the cogs of said wheels engaging in holes in the periphery of said shuttle, a shaft 25, mounted in said case, and bevel gears on said shaft 25 to engage with gears connected to one of said cog wheels.
