Application June 5, 1946, Serial No. 674,460 2 Claims. (Cl. 242-62) This invention relates to a machine for winding cloth from a roll onto a tube and is especially designed for use in stores for dispensing small pieces of cloth of a few yards to customers by Winding from a large roll onto a tube and the like, so that the cloth is wound and measured and delivered to the customer in a compact roll, thus avoiding wrinkling and breaking of the cloth, such as in the case of oil cloth and the like.
It is an object of this invention to provide a cloth winding and measuring machine, which is adapted to hold a roll of cloth, and having means for clamping the end of the piece of cloth and unwinding it from the roll and winding it into a smaller package for delivery to customers.
It is another object of this invention to provide in a cloth winding machine, means supporting for rotation a roll of cloth, and means for supporting a tube onto which the cloth is wound, with means at each end of the tube for clamping the edges of the cloth, so that it will be wound around the tube, as the tube is rotated by suitable means associated with the tube.
It is also an object of this invention to have the apparatus adjustable for various widths of cloth.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the apparatus with portions thereof broken away;
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the apparatus with portions broken away;

Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 4 4 in Figure 1;

Referring more specically to the drawings, the numerals I0 and II indicate the front and rear foundation strips of the apparatus, and the end foundation strips are indicated at I2. Onto these foundation strips or framework is secured a suitable board I3 on which the main portion of the apparatus is mounted. The device is provided with a rear wall I4 and-end Walls I5 and I6.
` portions thereof, which confines Cn top of the bottom board I3 and on the front edge of the rear wall I4 is mounted a plurality of upstanding members, such as 20, 2 I, 22 and 23, and these are @cut away into a substantial semicircle, and mounted between the upright members 26 and 2I is a plurality of rollers 25 and between the members 22 and 23, is mounted a plurality of rollers 2E, on which a roll of cloth 21 is adapted to be supported.
On the front upper portion of the uprights 20 to 23 inclusive, there is mounted a bar 30. On the bar 3U, there is mounted a plurality of inverted U-shaped members 3|, having suitable bearings 32 confined therein, and in these bearings 32, the ends of rollers 33 and 34 are mounted. On a portion of one of the end walls, such as I6, is a suitable cloth measuring apparatus, the shank of which is indicated at 35, and this has a casing 36, in which suitable measuring apparatus is disposed and this casing 36 has a slot 31, through which the cloth 21a from roll 21 is passed, where it engages rollers 40 and 4I to actuate the measuring apparatus, which is closed beneath a dial 43, but not shown. The support 35 is secured to an uprising board 38, which rises from the base board I3.
Secured to the cloth measuring shank 35, is a bracket 45 and suitable brackets 46 and 41 are also secured to the upper front edges of members 20 to 23 inclusive, and project forwardly and have a closed channel member 48 secured on the front a slotted bar 49, having a slot 50 extending from one end thereof to the other. Forwardly of the forward edges of the end boards I5 and I6 are secured the strips 5I and 52, on which are mounted at members 53 and 54, these being secured to iiat members 5I and 52 by means of suitable bolts 55. These members 53 and 5'4 extend substantially from one side of the machineto the other.
Slidably mounted on members 5I and 52 and conned by the undercut members 53 and 54 is a pair of slides and 6I, which are adjusted apart from each other by means of a plurality of bolts 62 having their head members embedded in one of the members 60 or 6I, and having their threaded ends projecting into suitable holes in the other of these members, so that they can be spread apart from each other to give the proper amount of bind or friction between members 60 and 6I and members 53 and 54.
Mounted on these members 66 and 6I is a plate 63, which is secured to members 6U and 6I by means of suitable bolts 64, and mounted on the plate 63 is a member 66, on which rests a U-shaped bracket having a base 61 and uprising spaced apart prongs 68 and 69, the base portion 61 being secured to plate 63 by means of suitable bolts 18 and 1|. Rotatably mounted in these uprising members 68 and 69 is a shaft 12 having iixedly secured thereon a pinion 14, which meshes with a pinion 15 which is xedly mounted on a shaft 16 which is rotatably mounted in the upper end of members 68 and 69. The shaft 16 projects inwardly from the end of the machine and has a rounded portion 11, onto which is adapted to fit one end of a tube 18, onto which cloth is adapted to be wound. f.
Fixedly secured on the shaft 16 is a whe'el 85 having a counter-weight portion 19 andabout 180 from portion 19 is a projecting portion 88. The wheels 85 and 85' are secured in their respective shafts 16 and 16 by any suitable means, such as a set screw 85a. `The shaft 16 is recessed, as at 8|', and in this recess portion is movably mounted a plug 82, which has a projecting arcuate portion 83 and the shaft 13 is cut away, as at 84.
The wheel 85 has a slot 86 therein which coi cides with the cut away portions 8| in shaft 16 and in the cut away portion 8| and slot 86 is slidably mounted a block 81, which is integral with arcuate portions 83. Fixedly secured in block 81 by means of a set screw 88 is a shaft 89, which slidably penetrates portion 88, and has confined between portion 88 and block 81 a compression spring 98.
The upper end of shaft 89 has a head 9| thereon and immediately below the head is a sleeve 92 and immediately below the sleeve 92 is a button 93 which is rotatably mounted on shaft 89. This button has a beveled lower surface 94, so that when the button is `turned 98T vfrom the position, shown in Figures and 6, this ycam surface'94 riding on a cam surface 9,5 on the portion 88 of the wheel will raise the block 81 and its arcuate portion 83 upwardly to allow the edge of a piece of .cloth to be inserted between the cut away portion or cavity 84 and the arcuate portion 83, and then when the button 93 is turned back to the position, shown in Figures 5 and 6, and will clamp the edge of the cloth in position ready to be wound around the tube 18.
Slidably mounted between the other ends of members 53 and 54 and resting on members 5| and 52 is a pair of members 96 and 91, which are identical as to shape to members 68 and 6|. These members are spread apart by bolts 98 which are identical to bolts 62 for the right hand side of the machine as used in Figures 1 and 2. Mounted on these members 96 and 91 is a plate |88, which is secured vto the members 96 and91 by means of suitable bolts |8| and on this plate |88 is mounted a base member |82, which is .secured to the base member |88 by suitable bolts |83. This base member |82 has rising upwardly therefrom spaced uprights |84 and |85, in which is rotatably mounted a shaft |86, which has a crank |81 thereon for imparting rotation to the shaft. On this shaft |86 is mounted a pinion 14. Meshing with this pinion 14' is another pinion 15 which is mounted on a shaft 16', and on this shaft 16' is mounted duplicates of the structure associated with shaft 16, and a description is not deemed necessary because the same reference characters will apply with the prime notation added.
In order to move the left hand assembly in Figure l, comprising plate |88 and associated parts, away from and towards the right hand assembly mounted on plate 63 so as to insert rollers 34 across the slot the tube 18 in position and to remove the tube with the cloth wound thereon, there is provided a bracket |88, in which is pivotally mounted, as at |89, a lever ||8 which has pivotally connected thereto, as at a link ||2 which is pivotally secured to plate |88, as at ||3. By swinging the lever l |8 on its pivot |99, the plate |88 and the assembly carried thereby can be moved relative to the guide- way rails 53 and 54 to remove or install a tube 18 on the projections 11 and 11'.
Mounted on the slides 68 and 6| by any suitable means, such as bolts ||6, is a plate ||5 and on this plate ||5 is mounted a bracket ||1, by meansl of bolts ||8, and projecting upwardly from this bracket is a board |28, which has integral therewith a clamp |2|, which by means ofa bolt |22 clampingly supports a bearing |23, in which is rotatably mounted a tube |24, fixedly secured on shaft 12 at one end, and supported by the bearing assembly |23 at the other end. This tube has a pin or key |21 integral therewith, which projects into a keyway |28 extending along the shaft |86, so that regardless of the adjustment of the plates 63 and |88 apart from or towards each other, the turning of shaft |86 will at ali times rotate shaft 12, and thus both pinions 14 and 14 will be rotated in unison.
It is thus seen that I have provided a convenient apparatus for holding a roll of cloth, and for winding any desired number of yards from theI roll onto the tube, wherein the roll of cloth of any desired length can be supported on the rollers 25 and 26 and can be led over the elongated 58 and clamped beneath the arcuate portions 83 and 83 and when the desired number of yards are wound a knife can be passed along slot 58 to cut the cloth at the proper place.
4Ity might be added that the sleeve 92 has a bore of sufficient size to accommodate a compression spring 92a which tends to hold the member 93 down against cam surface 85 even when the parts are in the clamping position shown in Figures 5 and 6.
In the drawings and specification, there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined in the claims.
I claim:
1. Cloth winding apparatus comprising a frame', a compartment disposed transversely of the rear end of the frame and having a plurality 'of substantially semi'circular members mounted transversely thereof and each provided with rollers for rotatably supporting a roll of cloth, a slotted member across which lthe cloth passes so that a knife can be inserted through the cloth and drawn transversely through the ycloth and guided by said slotted memberv for severing the cloth, a transversely disposed double trackway disposed across the front of the frame and having a pair of slidable members for movement therealong, each slidable member having an uprising bracket, a telescopic shaft mounted in the uprising brackets and having a pinion secured on each end thereof, a pair of stub shafts disposed in the upper end of the uprising brackets and each having a pinion thereon engaging with the pinions on the telescopic shaft, the saidstub shafts each having clamping Vmembers mounted thereonfor clamping the edges of the cloth, the proximate ends of the stub shafts being pointed and having a shoulder against which the ends of a tube onto which cloth is adapted to be wound are adapted to t when the two slides are moved toward each other, each of the clamping members comprising a radially slidable member having a clamping bill projecting inwardly toward the proximate ends of the stub shafts, resilient means for normally moving the radially slidable members into engagement with the stub shafts, each of the clamping members having means for moving the radially slidable members radially of the clamping members, the slides being mounted on said trackways for movement toward and away from each other, means for adjustably securing one of the slides in position near one end of the trackway and a lever pivoted at one end to one of the trackways and having a link pivoted intermediate its ends and the other end of the link being pivoted to the other slide, whereby said other slide can be quickly moved longitudinally of the trackway for moving the shoulder on the stub shaft associated therewith toward and away from one end of a tube disposed between the proximate ends of the stub shafts. In a cloth winding apparatus comprising a frame, a transversely disposed compartment at one end of the frame having arcuate members disposed thereacross and provided with rollers for supporting a roll of cloth from which the cloth is to be unwound, means for winding the cloth from the cloth roll, comprising a pair of transversely disposed trackways, a slide mounted near each end of the trackway, a pair of brackets rising from said slides and having the ends of a telescopic shaft mounted therein, each end of the telescopic shaft having a pinion xed thereon, a stub shaft mounted in the upper ends of said brackets and having pointed proximate ends and having a from the proximate ends, each of the stub shoulder portion spaced 6 shafts having a pinion engagement with `the escopic shaft, each of the stub shafts having fixedly mounted thereon a substantially circular housing, a radially movable member disposed in each housing and having an inwardly projecting tongue arcuate in cross section adapted to project inwardly toward the shoulder portion on the the stub shafts for engaging to be wound, resilient means for normally pressing the radially movable members inwardly to cause their tongues to engage the stub shafts to clamp the edges of the cloth to the stub shafts, one of said slides being adjustable along the trackway to any desired position and the being slidable along the trackway, means for quickly moving the other of said slides toward and away from the first slide, comprising a lever pivoted at one end to a fixed portion of the frame and having a link pivoted at one end intermediate the ends of the lever and having its other end pivoted to the said other slide and whereby the said other slide can be quickly moved away from and toward the rst slide to thereby quickly remove or install a tube between the proximate ends of the two stub shafts.
