This invention has reference to mechanism for measuringy fabrics in the web form, at the same time giving the opportunity to inspect the fabric as it passes between the supply roll and the winding` roll. n f
One of the objects of the invention is to provide mea-ns in such an apparatus to facilitate operation on a tubular fabric, such as is produced on a knitting machine or similar mechanism, and which includes means for keepingr the fabric properly spread in flat form of double thickness, as it is wound.
A further object is to provide improved means for causing; the length of the fabric to operate a register, as it passes to the winding-up roll, whereby the total length of the web will appear' on the register when it has been wound.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for controlling the machine, that is particularly designed to cause the web to pass over a suitable area for inspection by the operator, during the winding operation, so that any defects in the web can be readily discovered, and the operator can instantly arrest the winding mechanism, when such condition is discovered.
A further object ofthe invention isto provide means for operating on webs of different widths.

As shown in the drawings, the machine is in the form of an open frame denoted generally by 9 that supports a kind of table 410. At the front of the machine is a supply roll 11, carried on uprights 12, 12, and readily detached therefrom, shown with a roll 13 of fabric wound thereon. The end of the fabric is passed upwardly around a guide roll 14e carried by posts 15, 16, suitably shows the spreader form sepamounted on the table, with a roll 1T at the top, around which the web is passed. A
guide roll 18 is mounted on uprights 19-19. on the table a short distance beyond the posts, around which the web 13 is `brought down, and passed forward to the feed and winding' rolls. The operator standing` at thefront end ofthemachine caninspeet the web as it passes upwardly from the supply roll, to and around theupper guide roll 17. The winding;` and feed rolls are at the rear of the table, mounted between upright posts 20 and 21. A pair of feed rolls 22 and 23 are shown one above the other carried by these twoposts, between which the web is passed, and the lower roll, or both of them are of a certain predetermined circumference, such as one half of a yard. These rolls are preferably coveredvwith fabric. `When the web is drawn between these rolls bv their rotation, for each revolution of the. lower roll a halfyard of the web is advanced, that is indicated by a suitable register mechanism, well known in this art. VA counter is` indicated at 24- that will show the revolutions of these rolls, being` connected with 'the lower roll 22 in such a manner that a large` number ofrotations will be indicated, and which, by the various disks, may also indi cate fractions of a revolution.
A friction winding' roll 25 is shown mounted tc rotate in the posts 2() and 21 at its ends, which latter have a vertical movement in the grooved inner wall 28 of each of these posts. This roll 25, or the web wound thereon, will be free to move downwardly to contact with the upper feed roll 2B. The web 13, after passing rearward from the guide roll 18, is. caused to travel between the two feed rolls 22 and 23, suitably driven in the proper directions as indicated by the arrows; and the end of the web, after passing,` between these rolls to the rear, is secured to the winding` roll by suitable means; lt will be understood that the rolls 22 and 23 being driven by suitable means, will by the engagement of the web and on the roll25, serve to turn this roll and wind up the web thereon, and as the diameter of this winding,l roll increases from the accumulation'of the layers of fabric thereon, the roll 17 itself will move upward in its slotted guide at the ends, in the posts. While the surface area of this winding roll' will increase with its thickness, relative to the rolls 22 and 23, the surface speed ofthe latter rolls will be constant, and the register will properly show the length of the web that passes between these rolls, and as accumulated on the winding;r roll 25.
Suitable means are. provided for driving these feed rolls. They are shown provided with meshing gears 27 and 28 respectively, on the shafts 29 and 30 of the rolls,` and the latter Shaft carries a` grooved pulley 31. This pulley is driven by a. belt 32, from pulley 371 on a shaft 33 carried by brackets 34 and 35, on a suitable cross frame 36, at the lower part of the frame. This shaft 33 is shown having a pulley 37 secured thereto, which may be driven by belt 38 from wide pulley 39, fast on a cross shaft 40. The latter carries a pulley 41 shown asdriven by a belt 42, from` pulley 43 on a suitable electric motor 44.` The latter may have a usual control box and lever 45 adjacent the front, whereby the operator can stop and start the motor. On the shaft 33 is a loose pulley 46 adjacent the tight pulley 37, so that the belt 38 can be suitably shifted from one pulley to the other, still engagingthe wide drivingr pulley 39, which will serve to engage and free the feed rolls. A shaft 4T on the base or floor carries an arm 4S. that engages a slide 49 which carries a belt engagingfork 50. The shaft 47 also carries a foot lever or pedal 51, that will rock this shaft when moved down, and swing the rod and belt shifter to move the belt from the tight pulley to the loose pulley that will cut olf the power from the feed rolls. This movement will compress a spring 52 adjacent the arm 48 that tends to retain the belt shifted onto the tight pulley. Then the pedal 50 is thus moved down, it will engage a detent 53 that will hold it depressed with the belt shifted to the loose pulley. It will be seen that when the datent is kicked off by the op erator, the spring' 52 will cause the belt shifter to move the belt. Means are further provided in connection with this foot control to act as aY brake and very quickly arrest the rotation of the feed rolls, so that the operator on discovering an imperfection in the web, or should it be desired to quickly stop the winding, the feed rolls are at once arrested. On the shaft 49 is placed a brake shoe 54, that when the pedal is depressed and the shaft 49 carries the belt shifter to move the belt to the loose pulley, will be brought into engagement with the side of the driving pulley 37, see Fig. 8. This will at once arrest the pulley 37 and stop the feed rolls. lll/Then the pedal is released and the spring again shifts the pulley, the brake arm will release the tight pulley.
Tn winding the tubular fabric, it is desirable or necessary to keep it properly spread out or distended because of the two thicknesses and the doubled edges. Means are provided for keeping the double weh properly spread out, shown in the form of a spreading frame, indicated separately in Fig. 7. It will be understood that this guide plate 59 will serve to accommodate different widths of `web up to the full width of the rolls 22 and 23, and corresprmdn ing sizes of the spreaders employed.

In a device 'for winding tubular fabrie Webs, feed rolls to draw the Web, a spreader device comprising a flat trame that is placed inside of the tubular web adjacent the rolls, means arranged to support the said frame in proximity to the said rolls to cause the cloth to pass around the frame and into the rolls in a proper spread condition, upright guide rolls adjacent the ends of the frames With means for adjusting them together toward and Jfrom each other to accom- Ilo modate different lengths of frames for different fabric Widths.
8. In a device for Winding tubular fabric Webs, feed rolls to draw the web, a spreader device comprising a comparatively small cylinder with a rod smaller' than the cylinder bent at the ends and secured to the cylinder to form therewith an oblong rectangle, of a length at the two rod ends for insertion in the tubular web' for proper spreading of the web., a cross plate to support the frame in proximity to the said rolls to permit the cloth to pass around the frame and into the rolls in a proper spread condition, said frame resting by its rod ends on the cross plate with the cylinder overhanging the edge of the plate in proximity to the feed rolls, upright guide rolls adjacent the ends of the frame, with means for adjusting them together toward and from each upright guide rolls adjacent the ends of the frame, with means for adjusting them simultaneously toward and from each other to accommodate different lengths of frames for different fabric Widths.

In a device of the character set forth, the combination with the feed rolls, and a Winding roll, of a motor shaft with means for driving the shaft, and a device in the driving means arranged to connect and free the shaft, a foot lever on the base, and a brake connected with the foot lever, wherebythe device can be opened and the brake at once applied to arrest the Winding rolls.

In a device of the character set forth, the combination with the feed rolls and a Winding roll, of a motor shaft arranged to drive the shaft and a Wide pulley, a shaft Vcarrying a fast and a loose pulley a belt connecting saidlatter pulleys with said side pulley to be shifted onto either pulley means for driving the feed rolls from said fast pulley, a foot lever a spring shaft a belt and the fast pulley on the rolls, said foot lever when depressed serving to compress the spring and to shift the belt to the loose pulley, and a detent arranged to hold the foot lever depressed with the belt on the loose pulley.
