Description

UNITED STATES @PATENT OFFICE. I
SAMUEL Y. AUSTIN AND ROY DALLIS, LAGRANGE, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOBS TO 'THE UNITY COTTON MILLS, 0F LAGRANGE, GEORGIA, A CORPORATION OF GEORGIA.
sroor...
Specification or Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 21, 1913.
Application filed March 18, 1912. Serial No. 684,558.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that We, SAMUEL Y. AUS- rm and Roy DALLIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Lagrange, in the county of Troup and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spools, of which the following is a specification.
()ur invention relates to improvements in spools, and is specially designed as, and particularly applies to spools with removable heads.
In the manufacture of cords and twines it has been customary to wind the cord, twine or thread upon large spools or tubes for shipment or storing. When it is desired to use this cord etc., for braiding, the tube is placed upon amachine and the cord unwound therefrom and onto a number of' smaller tubes or spools. This equipment of small spools with the cord Wound'thereon is then placed upon the-braiding machine and the cords braided in well known manner.
The purpose of this invention is to eliminate the intermediate step above set forth, of unwinding from a large spool or tube to a series of small spools or tubes, thus decreasing the cost and labor expended and eliminating loss of time. This purpose is accomplished by winding the manufactured cord, thread or twine, upon tubes, such as pasteboard or wooden barrels at the time the thread is produced, and in such size as is convenient for use on the braiding machine. The braiding machine is equipped with a suitable number of pairs of heads adapted to be used in connection with these tubes, and when the wound tubes are brought to the machine, the only operation necessary is the application of the heads to the tubeand the attachment of the wound headed spool to the braiding machine.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as illustrated in the drawings, clearly set forth in the specification and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawin s we have illustrated one example of the p ysical embodiment of our invention constructed ac- 4 is an elevation'of one of the heads or ends detached. I
- The barrel or body portion 1 of the spool may be constructed of pasteboard, wood, or other comparatively soft'material, and is of a size suitable or convenient for various uses.
The removable heads or ends 2 and 3 are preferably of cast metal, and as usual are formed .with the teeth ion the head 3 and the rounded bottom portion 5 of head 2. Each head is provided with a stem, as 6 of tubular construction and formed with the usual bore 7, which opens through the head tocomplete a continuous opening through the spool for attachment to the braiding machine.
An inspection of thedrawings will disclose the fact that the stems or shanks are each tapered, the diameter of the stem decreasing from the head to the free end of the stem. It will also be observed that each stem is formed with a series of corrugations or depressions 8 which form sharp edges 9, running from the head to the end of. the stem. These sharp edgesare for the purpose of firmlysecuring the head and spool body, or pasteboard tube, together against relative rotation, and the tapered construction of the stemsinsures a close frictional engagement of the stem within the bore of the pasteboard tube.
In applying the heads to the body of the spool, the stems are forced into the bore of the pasteboard tube, and as the portion of the shank or stem adjacent the head is of greater diameter than the interior diameter of the tube, the parts may be forced into such close frictional contact as to firmly hold the members together. The compara tive softness of the tube permits the sharp edges 9 to enter therein, and in this manner a very efiective and rigid connection of the tachable, and one of said heads formed with parts is accomplished. ratchet teeth.
Having thus fully described our inven- In testimony whereof we affix our signation, what we claim as new and desire to tures in presence of two witnesses.
