Description

(No ModeL') K I. C. DAVIS.
sPooL 0F THREAD.. No. 268,198. Patented Nov. 28, 1882.
W7?? M2M,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
INA C. DAVIS, 0F MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY.
SPOOL `OF THREAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 268,198, dated November 28, 1882. Application filed July 24, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern V Be it known that I, INA CRAVEN DAVIS, a subject of the Grown of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Montclair, in the county ot' Essex and State ot' New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spools ot' Thread, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spools ot the kind which have upon one head a projection smaller than the head; and the object ot' the invention is to provide for securing the end of the thread in a secure manner and to displayaportion of the thread on the head so that its quality and degree ot' fineness may be readily ascertained.
The invention consists in a spool of thread having its head provided with a central projection, and havinganotch or nick in the edge ot' the head and a notch or nick in said projection', and having the portion ofthe thread between said notches or nicks exposed on the head.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, I have illustrated in perspective Vseveral spools of thread, all of which embody my invention in a more or less modified form.
In all the figures, A A designate the heads ofthe spool, and it is upon the head A that the thread c is exposed. On the head Al is a central projection, A2. In Vthe head A of each spool at the edge is the usual nick or notch, b, and after the .spool is lled the end portion of the thread is drawn into the nick or notch b and there secured.
In the spool shown in Fig. 1 the thread c, after being secured in the nick or notch b, is carried partly across the head A', and is then secured in a notch, b', in the face or end of the projection A2.
In the spool shown in Fig. 2 the thread c is secured in the nick or notch b, and is then drawn across the head A and secured in a notch, b', in the side ot' the projection A2, at'n ter which it is drawn across the face ot' the spool in the direction of its length and secured in a nick or notch, b?, in the head A.
In the spool shown in Fig. 3 the thread a is secured in the nick or notch b and is then drawn across the head A and secured in two notches, b', in the face or end of the projection A2, the thread being drawn across the hole c, so that it maybe broken or drawn ont by the. spindle ot" a sewingmachine when placed thereon.
In the spool shown in Fig. 4 the thread a. issecured in the nick or notch b and is then drawn across the head A and secured in a notch, b', in the side ofthe projection A2.
In each example ot' my invention the thread is secured in a notch or nick in the head and in a notch or nick in the projection, and the portion ot' the thread exposed on the head enables the degree of tlneness and the color or shade to be readily ascertained, and the, portion ofthe thread so exposed kmay be grasped in the fingers and serve to release the thread from the notch or nick b.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A spool of thread having its head provided With a central projection, and having a notch or nick in the edge of the head and a notch or nick in said projection, and having the portion ot' thread between said notches or 'nicks exposed on the head, substantially as and for the purpose described.
INA G. DAVIS.
