SHUTTLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 16, 1911.
Application filed July S, 1907. Serial No. 382,630.
T o all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that DAviD H. SAUNDERS, of Gloucester', in the county of Essex and State'of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttles; and hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in shuttles and particularly to shuttles adapted for use in net making machines.
The object of the invention is to so construct a shuttle that the thread or twine carried by the bobbin may be subjected at times to retractive strain.
Another object of the invention is to provide a shuttte with a thread or twine carrying bobbin and with a spring retracted tension drum.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the following description.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the shuttle.
The invention consists in other novel features of construction and combination of parts as shall hereinafter be more fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1, represents an obverse side elevation of the improved shuttle, parts of the same being broken away. Fig. 2, represents a sectional view of the same taken on line 2 2 Fig. 1. Fig. 8, represents a reverse side elevation of the shuttle, illustrating more particularly the exterior of the same.
Similar numerals of reference designate correspondingparts throughout.
As shown in the drawings in its preferred form 5 indicates the main case of the shuttle having the circular rear end 6 and the tapering forward end 7 furnished with the nose member 8 in the nature of a hook by reason of the slot 9. From the main shuttle case 5 and forming part thereof is the wall 10 which follows the shape of the part 5 and is furnished at its upper portion with the hooks 11 and 12, of which the hook 11 has the inclined edge 13,`- while the lower portion of said wall 10 is furnished with the socket 14 open at the reverse side of the shuttle as shown in Fig. 3.
On the obverse side of the shuttle, and embraced by the wall 10 are the thread or twine carrying means. Near the forward end of the shut-tle is the circular compartment 15 in which the spool or bobbin 1G is rotatably conned by the plate 17 removably secured to the shuttle by means of the screw 18 and having the projection 19 which engages the bore in the hub of the bobbin 16. At the rear portion of the shuttle is secured the screw shaft 2O on which is journaled the take up drum 21 having on its hub the annular lip 22 furnished with the thread or twine passage 23, while between said drum and the side of the shuttle is located the retraction spring 24: secured at one end to the hub of said drum and at the other to the pin 25 extending from the shuttle wall.
A supply of thread or twine a-z is wound on the spool or bobbin 16 and is then led through the thread passage 23 in the lip 22 of the tension drum and wound around the tension drum 21, the end being carried through a slot 10 in the lower portion of the wall or lip 10. rlhe strength of the spring 24 determines the retractive strain exerted on the thread or twine a-a passing over the drum 21 and the frictional rcsistance offered to the passage of the thread or twine through the thread channel in the periphery of the drum 21 combined with retractive action of spring 24: tends to exert a tension on the thread or twine.
Shuttles of this nature are particularly designed for use in net making machines which form no part of the present invention but in which it is desired to exert independent retraction of the 4strands 'forming the individual knots. This action is made possible by the use of the shuttle herein described.
The hooked nose 8 and the hooks 11 and 12 are designed to be engaged by any suitable mechanisms respectively for moving the shuttle forward and for lifting the same, while the socket 14 is designed to be engaged by a holding device whereby the shuttle is held stationary while the thread or twine is drawn therefrom to form the preliminary loop of the knot. As such shuttle moving and holding devices form no part of the presentinvention they are not herein illustrated.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shuttle comprising a flat casing open mounted in said casing and haring a thread guide adjacent its axis whereby the thread or twine from Said bobbin may be led through said thread passage of said drum 15 and then around said drum and through the thread slot of the shuttle casing as and for the purpose described.
BAVD H. SAUNDERS. Vitnesses:
H. J. MILLER, M. M. HARRINGTON.
at one side7 a flat plate pi\fotally mounted on a part of said casing and having a projection7 a rotatable Spool having an axial bore engaged by Said projection, and a 1 Spring retracted drum journaled on a shaft secured in the side Wall. of said casing7 as described.
2. A shuttle comprising a casing having a thread slot in its lower Wall, a Spool or bobbin removably journaled in Said casina, and a spring retracted drum rotatably Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. C.
