Description

UNITED STATES? PATENT QFFIOE.
HENRY R. NEWGOMB, OF FLORENCE, ALABAMA.
IMPROVEMENT IN THREAD-TENSION DEVICES FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,038, dated January 23, 1872; antedated January 8, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. NEwcOMB, of Florence, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Alabama have invented a new and Improved Mode of Adjusting Thread on the Howe Cylinder Sewing-Machine, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Heretof'ore all thread used through the needle of the Howe cylinder sewing-machine has had to be removed from the original spools on to the spool made to t the machine by a very troublesome process of removing and readjusting the entire tension apparatus.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the above sewing-machine with a selfacting thread-adjuster,77 which will enable the operator to adjust any thread direct from the original spools without having to rewind the thread or readjust the tension.
I construct a self-acting thread-adjuster, of which Ais the supporting-arm. B is ahole or opening of convenient size to admit the apparatus being secured to the sewing-machine. C is an upright rod of proper size to receive the spool from which it is desired to use the thread. D is an upright rod having an eye, E. F is a revolving cylinder or drum, having two or more grooves cut around its surface.
The mode of operation is'substant-ially as follows: A spool of thread is placed on the upright rod G; from thence the thread passes through the eye E; then once around the spool belonging to the machine; thence once around the revolving-drum lf; then to the machinespool again, and back a second time around the drum or cylinder F; and lastly, once again around the machine spool; from whence it proceeds to the needle as heretofore.
The Object of the revolving cylinder or drum F with the grooves is to prevent the thread from becoming crossed or tangled while passing around the spool belonging to the machine.
What I claim as my invention, and seek to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The spool-holder, having an eye, E, and the revolving cylinder F, with two or more grooves around its surface, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
HENRY R. NEWGOMB. Witnesses:
