Description

.1a. 0..,BURGBSS. Tension Device for Th'read-Spools.
No. .212,893 Patented Mar. 4,1s79.
INVENTGRI WITNESSESL UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
RICHARD O. BURGESS, OF PROVIDENCE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES HORTON, OF WOONSOCKET, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN TENSION DEVICES FOR THREAD-SPOOLS.
Spccilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,893. dated March 4, 1879; application filed September 9, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD O. BURGEss, of thecity and county of Providence, and State of Rhode Island, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Tension Devices for Thread-Spools; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure l is a view, in perspective, of an ordinary threadspool provided with my improved tension device; and Fig. 2 represents my improvement in full lines and a threadspool in broken lines.
The object of my invention is to provide a tension device for threadspools of simple construct-ion and small initial cost, and of such form that it may be readily secured to aspool and prevent the thread from bein g accidentally un woun d th erefrom.
To this end my invention consists in the particular construction of tension device, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, b represents a wire-holder, formed with return-bends b', which latter are inserted within the central hole of the spool, and constitute journals for supporting the 1atter. The wire-holder b has attached thereto a yielding presser-bar, C, preferably made of wire. One end of the presser-bar C is wound about the central portion of holder b, while the outer or free end of said bar is provided 'in dotted lines, or from a ring or similar device attached to the holder'b, and thus be secured to the clothing ot'the person using the same. As the eye el rests against the thread, the free rotation of the spool is prevented, and thus the thread is kept tightly wound, and as the thread passes through the eye its end is therefore always accessible.
I make no broad claim to a tension device for thread-spools, as I am aware that such devices, broadly considered, are not novel with me; but,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patentl A tension device for thread-spools, consisting of a wire-holder, b, having return-bends b formed on opposite ends thereof', and a yielding presser bar or wire, C, one end of which is attached to the holder b, while the opposite end is provided with an eye, d, which rests against the thread, substantially as set forth.
RICHARD O. BURGESS.
