PRINTING-ROLL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May *7 1912.
Application filed June 23, 1910, Serial No. 568,518. Renewed March 7, 1912. Serial No. 682,091.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUssELL H. BREMER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented. new and useful Improvements in Printing- Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing rolls, and the object of the invention is to provide a hand operated device of this character wherein novel, effective and simple means are employed for the interchangeable engagement with the type.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved carrier for the roll which will permit of its being readily detached when it is desired to change the type thereon.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views :Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved roll and carrier therefor. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the roll with parts in section. Fig. 3 is an end view of the roll. Fig. A is a transverse section through the roll taken on the line 44 of Fig. 2.
The roll as designed by me is intended particularly as an advertising device and is constructed to be operated preferably by hand, it being obvious, however, that it may be used in any other manner where a roll of this character is desirable. The roll consists of a cylindrical body 1 which is formed throughout its length to provide longitudinal grooves 2. The type A is preferably formed of rubber and each type is provided with flanges B which extend circumferentially of the roll. The adjacent type have their flanges B disposed adjacent to the grooves 2 in the roll, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing. Type-clamping elements are employed for holding the type to the roll, and as illustrated, such elements are Tshaped and formed to provide inwardly extending ribs 3 which fit in the grooves 2. The ribs 3 are formed at their outer ends to provide oppositely extending clamping flanges 4 which are designed to grip the adj acent flanges of the type to hold them operatively positioned on the roll. The typeclamping elements may be constructed of any suitable material which may be found most desirable for the purpose intended and which will permit of their convenient attachment or removal from the roll when it is desired to change the form of type.
The roll is provided at its ends with out- Wardly extending headed pins 5 which are designed to fit the keyhole slots 6 in the cap members 7. These cap members 7 fit over the ends of the roll and the flanges 8 of such members may be conveniently brought into clamping engagement with the ends of the type-clamping elements hereinbefore described.
The roll is provided with trunnions 9 and 10. The trunnion 9 extends into the bearing 11 at the extremity of the arm 12 of the carrier frame 13. The arm 14 of the carrier frame is provided with a hinged portion 15 on which is formed a bearing 16 for receiving the trunnion 10. To hold the roll op eratively positioned in the arms of the carrier 12 I provide the pivoted portion 15 of the arm 14: with a keeper 17 which is designed to receive the bolt 18 in the casing 19 011 the fixed part of the arm 14:. The bolt is provided with a manipulating knob 20 which may be operated when it is desired to release the bolt from its keeper for the purpose of moving the arms of the carrier 13 relatively to permit removal of the roll when it is desired to change the form of type thereon. The device as described is particularly intended as an advertising article for printing any desired advertisements on wrapping papers. The carrier frame 13 is provided with a shank 21 on which is mounted a handle 22.
By providing the relatively movable arms on the carrier frame it will be seen that when they are operatively associated at the sides of the cap members 7 they serve to hold such members against accidental displacement from the pins 5.
From the construction described it will be seen that a novel, simple and inexpensive printing roll is provided and, incident to the construction of the type-gripping and. clamping members, I provide for the interchangeable arrangement of the type so that a form may be arranged thereon to suit the occaslon.
I claim:
A printing device including a roll, headed pins secured to the end of the roll adjacent its marginal edge, removable caps fitting the ends of said roll and having a diameter greater than the same, said caps being provided with keyhole slots to receive the headed pins whereby to secure the caps to the roll, inwardly projecting flanges formed on the caps, T-shaped type-gripping members extending longitudinally of the roll and detachably secured thereto, the opposite ends of the lateral flanges of the T-shaped typegripping members underlying the flanges of the caps so as to be securely held in the roll, trunnions for the roll rigidly secured thereto and projecting through the caps, a substantially U-shaped frame, bearings formed in the free end of said frame to receive the trunnions of the roll, a handle formed medially of the connecting arms of the frame, one of said arms being pivoted medially of its length, a keeper formed on the pivoted portion of the arm and adjacent the pivot, and a retaining bolt carried by the stationary portion of the arm to engage with said keeper whereby to retain the pivoted portion against movement.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUSSELL H. BREMER.
