Description

J. A. HAMELBACK.
A WRENCH. APPLICATION FILED MAY 1. 1915- Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
JACOB A. HAMELBACK, OF NEWARK, OHIO.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
Application filed May 1, 1915. Serial No. 25,189.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB A. HAMELBACK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in wrenches, and the object is to provide means for engaging the rotatable head and cause it to rotate upon the actuation of the handle.
The invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a view in side elevation; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the invention; and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
The wrench is preferably constructed of three strips or sections fastened together. The two outer sections 1 and 3 have an intermediate section 2 interposed therebetween, and at one end an opening 4: is formed in the several sections in which a rotatable head 5 is received. The other terminal of sections forming the handle 6.
he outer sections 1 and 3 are provided with slots 7 extending from the opening 4 in which pawls 8, 8 are received. The two pawls are fastened together by means of a pin 9 which passes through the two pawls and the intermediate section 2. The pin forming the pivotal point of the pawls. Springs 10 are received in the slots 7 and bear against the pawls for causing them to engage the teeth 11 on the head 5.
Side plates 12 are connected to the wrench, and are fastened to the sections 1 and 3 by screws 13. Each member is provided with an opening 11 in which an end of the head 5 is received for forming a journal for the head.
The two pawls 9 engage the same tooth of the head at the same time, and when the handle is actuated the head is caused to rotate. The even pressure exerted from each side of the wrench upon the head prevents any lateral strain upon the head causing it to bind in the sections or its journals.
A central web 15 is formed in the head 5 for dividing the head into two sections, forming a cavity 16 on each side thereof, so that the nut can be inserted from either side. When the nut is being removed it is inserted in one of the cavities, and when the nut is placed in position it is inserted in the other cavity, and then the handle is actu-- ated to cause the head to rotate for the purpose of applying or removing the nut.
The head is supported entirely by the side plates 12, and they prevent the head from being forced out of the opening 4: and from engagement with the pawls. Furthermore, it does not matter in which end of the head the nut is inserted as there is no possible chance of friction being created by tilting the head in the opening 4, or drawing one side of the head against the side members or sections which would produce friction and interfere with the rotation of the head.
I claim As an article of manufacture, a wrench comprised of a handle made up of three pieces having a circular opening in each of the three pieces at one end thereof which are adapted to register, the openings in the two outer members communicating with pockets, arranged on either side of the central portion, a head having a toothed pe riphery fitted to rotate in said circular openings, internally fashioned to receive a nut in either side, spring pawls on either side of the handle and received within said pockets and engaging the peripheral teeth of the head, leaf springs received within said pockets and surrounding said pawls, and side plates removably secured to the handle on each side of outer members adapted to cover the said pockets, said plates having circular openings, the diameters of which correspond with the outer diameter of the rotatable head and of less diameter than the toothed portion of the head, whereby to confine the head rotatably within the circular openings in the handle and form bearings wherein the head turns.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB A. HAMELBACK.
