KEY REMOVER,
APPLICATION FILED FEB $2. 1916- ].,205AO9. Patented Nov. 21,1916.
mnwtoz HRTHUR Swmm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR SWINK, 0F BLUFF CITY, KANSAS.
KEY-REMOVER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR SWINK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blufi' City, in the county of Harper and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Key-Removers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to certain improvements in key removers and has relation more partlcularly to a device of th1s general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with shafts wherein a member is keyed thereto, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including two wedge members adapted to receive an inserted key therebetween and adapted to effectively clamp the key, whereby the same may be extracted or withdrawn.
Furthermore it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a body adapted to be positioned upon a shaft or the like and provided with means to effectively engage a key and provided with further means whereby the requisite movement may be imparted to the body for extracting or withdrawing the key. 7
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved key remover whereby certain impor tant advantages are attained and the device ,is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better'understood, I will now proceed to 'de scribe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein V Figure l is a view in plan of the inner face of my key remover as herein embodied;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken substantiallyv on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an end elevational view of my improved device in applied position, the coacting shaft and key being shown in section; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4il of Fig. l. V
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, S denotes a shaft having arranged Specification of Letters Patent. P t t -21, 191 Application filed February 12, 1916.
Serial N 0. 78,041.
therein a key K with which my improved device as herein disclosed is adapted to be employed. V
. As herein set forth, my improvedkey remover comprises a bodyl of predetermined dimensions having oneof its faces'provided with a groove or channel 2 of requisite dimensions and adapted to receive aportion of the shaft S, and it is to be further observed that sald groove 2 has in communication therewith an opening 3 which, in addition to reducing the weight of the body 1, ac-
commodates a gib or the like in such instances when a gib maybe employed in connection with the key.
The channel 2 at substantially its transverse center is provided with the longitudinally disposed supplemental groove 4 having its side walls under-cut and arranged on converging planes, and coacting' with the side walls of the supplemental groove 4: are the wedge members 5 having their opposed faces serrated or toothed in order to materially increase the gripping action thereon upon the key K which is adapted to be arranged between said wedges.
Threaded through an end of the body 1 at opposite sides of the supplemental groove 4 are the elongated headed members 6 adapted to engage the adjacent ends of the wedges 5 whereby the same will be properly moved in order to cause the same to grip the key K positioned therebetween. The body 1 is also provided at one end and at opposite sides of the channel 2 with the outstanding lugs 7 arranged at opposite sides of the groove 4 and through which the elongated headed members 8 are threaded, while the opposite end of the body 1 at its outer face and at a point intermediate the lugs 7 is provided with a single lug 9through which the elongated headed member'10 is threaded. It willbe at once perceived that the headed members 8 and 10 serve as jacks, whereby the requisite movement may be imparted to the body 1, after thewedges 5 have been engaged with the key K, to extract or withdraw the key.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a key remover constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification Without material departure from the scope of the appended claim and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practiee except as required by the scope of said claim.
I claim:
A key remover comprising a body having one face provided With an elongated groove, Wedges mounted Within the groove and between which the key is adapted to be inserted, members threaded through one end of the body and engaging the Wedges for moving the Wedges in one direction to cause the same to grip the key inserted therebetween, and threaded members carried by the body for imparting movement to the body in one direction, said threaded members overlying opposite faces of the body, and said last named threaded members being alternately arranged.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
ARTHUR SlVINK.
