GARMENT-HANGER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MIOI-IAEL RAUGHTI- GAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norwich, in the county of New London and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to that class of garment hangers, commonly provided within the collars of coats, whereby the garment may be readily suspended from a hook, nail or peg, and my present purpose is to provide a cheap and convenient form of wire hanger that may be quickly attached to a garment without stitching and which may be as readily removed whenever it is desired to press the said garment.

The drawings hereto annexed illustrate my said invention, Figure 1 being a dotted outline of the neck portion of a coat having attached thereto a wire hanger embodying my present improvements. Fig. 2 is a detached, enlarged, view of said hanger and Fig. 3 is a relatively enlarged sectional view taken on line 22 of said Fig. 2.

My improved garment-hanger is desirably constructed of a single piece of metal, preferably wire, of requisite strength, etc., for the purpose intended. Said wire is bent, intermediate its ends, on the arc of a circle, as shown at a, to form the top of the hanger. Thence, the wire is extended downward, on both sides, for a suitable distance, as shown at 6, Z), being desirably bent inward at diametrically opposite points, as shown at 5 72 thence is extended downward in an outwardinclined line, to form the portions b b thence is bent inward, on both sides, as shown at (Z, (Z, thence is extended upward along an inclined line (5 da, preferably substantially parallel with the portions 6 6 so as to form pockets d (Z (into which the fabric of the garment will be drawn by rea son of the weight of the suspended garment, thus preventing separation of the pointed terminals, about to be described, and their accidental withdrawal from the garment),

said upward-extending portions (Z (I ending in the wire-terminals c, c, which are disposed horizontally and which are projected toward and overlap each other, and which are preferably sharpened or pointed at their ends, as shown. One of the wire-terminals is advantageously grooved, as shown at 0 a portion of the other terminal extending into and lying within said groove, whereby the terminals are brought intosuch close relation with each other that they have little or no tendency to catch in adjacent folds of the cloth of the garment, and whereby separation of the terminals is largely prevented.

It will be noted that the overlapping terminals are straight and thus may serve as the pintle of a hinge when the hanger is attached to a garment, so that the hanger may be raised as shown in full lines (Fig. 1) when it is desired to hang up the garment, or said hanger may be folded downward, as indicated in dotted lines, when the garmentis to be worn.

My described device may be very cheaply made, by means of automatic machinery, and may be readily attached to, or detached from a garment.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and wish to secure by Letters Patent A garment-hanger constructed of a single piece of wire; said wire being bent, intermediate of the ends thereof, on the arc of a circle, to form the top of the hanger; thence, extended downward, on both sides, for a suitable distance; thence, bent inward, on both sides; thence, bent upward parallel with the lower portion of said downward exten sion, to form two pockets, and ending in horizontally-disposed terminals, said terminals being projected toward and overlapping each other, one of said terminals being grooved, and a portion of the other terminal extending into and lying within said groove.
