To all whom 'it may concern:

' a citizen of the United States, residing at Ransom, in the county of Pike and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Miners Safety-Lamps, of which the following is a specication.

This invention relates to improvements in lamp attachments for miners caps.

In carrying out my invention, it is my purpose to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, which may be arranged upon any ordinary make of miners cap, and which will eHectively sustain the lamp upon the cap without danger of accidental displacement of the same.

In the ordinary method of securing lamps to a miners cap, the said lamp is provided with a wire hook which is adapted to attach the lamp to the shield of the cap. This arrangement permits of the swinging of the lamp incident to the movement of the head of the miner, and frequently the lightof the lamp is thus extinguished, and the miner is thus left in the dark, and thus subjected to the danger of contacting with the bracing of the mine or danger of falling across the track of the motor cars and being without means of signaling the motorman runs the risk of being run over by the cars.

It is the primary object of my invention to construct a shield lamp for miners which is provided with means that will effectively prevent the accidental removal of the lamp from the cap of the miner, but will hold the said lamp firmly and securely against movement in one direction, but which at the same time may be readily and quickly removed from the shield of the cap when desired.

With the above recited objects, and others of a similar nature in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.

Referring to the drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a miners cap constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lamp detached and looking toward the back of the same.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 represents an ordinary miners cap. The cap 1 has its front portion provided with a metallic shield 2. This shield is bent from theedge of the cap and secured tothe peak thereof as at 3. The body of the shield proper is inclined to conform to the cross sectional configuration of the cap, and the said body adjacent its upper extremity is formed with an o-set portion 5, the latter forming an abutment or stop for the lamp, as will presently be set forth. The eXtension of the shield beyond the stop 5 is secured to the top of the cap as designated by the numeral 6.

The numeral 7 designates the lamp. This lamp is of a rectangular cross sectional formation and is provided with the usual tube 8 and a hinged cap or cover 9. The cover in the present instance is formed with spaced flanges 10 and 11, the same adapted to engage both the inner and the outer edges of the open top of the lamp, and the closure of the lamp is hingedly connected with the back thereof as at 12.

The numeral 13 designates a flattened resilient tongue which is secured to the back of the lamp. This tongue has its vertical edges formed with beads 14E which are adapted to add to the strength of the said tongue 13 but not to detract from the resiliency thereof. The body 4 of the shield 2 directly below its stop 5 is provided with a rectangular opening 15, the same being of a size adapted to snugly receive the tongue 13, and the tongue is preferably curved having its lower extremity almost contacting with the back of the lamp. When the tongue is inserted through the opening 15, it will be noted that the inner face of the said tongue tightly engages with the rear face of the shield 2 while the upper portion of the lamp contacts with the angular stop or oif-set 5 of the said shield so that accidental removal of the lamp from the shield or the swinging of the lamp when arranged upon the shield is effectively prevented.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the simplicity of the device, as well as the advantages thereof, will, it is thought, commend themselves to those skilled in the art to which such inventions appertain, without further detailed description.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1. A miners cap provided with a shield, said shield having a rectangular opening and being provided with a stop arranged above the opening, a lamp, said lamp having its rear portion provided with a resilient tongue, the said tongue adapted to enter the opening of the shield and to Contact therewith7 Lund the upper portion of the lzunp being engaged by the stop when the tongue is inserted within the opening of the shield.

In combination with a niiners cap heving a metallic shield connected with the front thereof, said shield being provided with a rectangular opening and having an off-set portion forming a stop7 a` lmnp, said lanip having its rear portion provided with a resilient tongue, the seid tongue being of A a width equaling the width of the slot of the shield, the said tongue having its opposite edges bent to provide beadstand the solid tongue being Curved and adapted to enter the slot of the shield and to Contact with said shield, and the off-set of the shield adapted to engage with the top of the lzunp to pre- Vent the occidental withdrawal of the tongue through the opening of the shield.
