UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEVI L. TABOR, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
GLOVE AND MITTEN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEVI L. TABOR, a citizen of the United States, residing-at Milwaukee, county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gloves and Mittens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gloves and mittens.
The object of my invention is to provide means for securing economy in the use of lining material, avoiding the use of cumbrous and uncomfortable connecting seams in the lining members, and preventing the lining members from withdrawing or from drawing the outer covering out of shape.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a view of a mitten embodying my invention as seen from the inner or palm face, a portion of the palm being disconnected from the back of the mitten and folded over to show the position of the lining members, and the manner in which they are attached to the outer covering members. Fig. 2 is a sectional view, drawn substantially on line 0000 of Fig. 1, but showing the palm member of the mitten properly connected to the back. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the same line as Fig. 2, but showing my invention as applied to a turned mitten. Fig. 4 is a view of a glove embodying my invention and showing one of the fingers with the end portions of the outer coverings separated and swung to a position exposing their inner surfaces.
Like parts are identified by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
The outer covering members of my improved mitten, are composed of a palm member A, a back member B, and of thumb members, of which the outer member C appears in Fig. 1. In manufacturing the mitten, a lining member A and a back lining member B are formed in the general contour of the palm and back members A and B respectively, but the lining members are of less size, their dimensions being such that when applied to the inner surfaces of the palm and back members A and B respectively, a marginal portion 1 of said outer coverings will be left exposed, and the lining member A is then stitched to the palm member A by a row of stitches 2 along the margin of the lining member. The back Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 6, 1911.

Serial No. 606,703.
lining member B is secured to the back B by a similar row of stitches 3. These stitches extend along the outer sides and across the finger end of the mitten, as shown in Fig. 1, and they may extend across the wrist portion, but this is not essential. After the lining members have been thus independently :secured to the inner surfaces of the outer covering members, said outer covering members are assembled and connected with each other in any suitable manner, such for example, as the outer marginal row of stitches A in Fig. 1. The stitches 4: do not extend through the lining members, but merely pass through the exposed margins 1 of the outer covering members. The finger or thumb pieces are formed in the same manner, the linings being connected independently to each piece by stitches 2, and the outer coverings being connected by stitches 4: between the marginal edges of the lining members and the marginal edges of the outer covering members.
Referring to Fig. 2, it will be observed that the lining members are not directly connected with each other and are not connected by means of the stitching 4, the independent rows of stitching 2 and 3 constituting the only means of connection for the lining members with the outer coverings.
Referring to Fig. 3, it will be observed that the construction is the same as that shown in the other views, but the edges of the several members are turned inwardly, so that the outer surfaces of the outer members abut each other at the point of connection by means of the stitches 4.. The process of construction is exactly the same as that followed in producing the mitten shown in Figs. 1 and 2 with the exception that the outer coverings are stitched together by the stitches 4 with their outer surfaces abutting, after which the mitten is turned inside out. The turning of gloves and mittens in this manner is well known in the art and requires no further explanation.
With the above described construction, each lining member is securely held in a correct position with reference to the outer or covering member, and the connection of the lining member does not add to the thickness of the glove or mitten along the edge margins of the outer covering members. There is no tendency for the lining to withdraw when the glove or mitten is removed from the hand of the wearer and When in v Wearing position, there are no lining seams vided with an independent lining member independently secured to its inner surface 'andpf less size than the outer member,
' leaving no connecting seams for the inner lining, except in cases Where a single lining member is itself made up from small pieces I stitched together as is frequently the case Where scrap is being utilized.
' Referring to Fig. 4, Which shows my invention embodiedin a form of glove cut in the style known as the Montpelier cut, it
' of the outer coverings from the margins of thelinings, and producing a lined. glove fin- Copies of this patent may be obtained for Will be observed that the fingers are formed of'four pieces, D, E, F and G, each having 2 a lining member D, E, F and G respectively, independently secured to each outer covering member, thus freeing the seams 4 1. In a glove or mitten, a set of outer cov-. ermg members st1tched together along their edge margins, and a set of lining members of less size, each stitched to one of the outer members independently of the other inem-l Ebers and Within the line of marginal stitching which connects the outer members.
2. In a glove or mitten, a set of outer covering members stitched together along their edge margins, and a set of lining members gof less size independently secured to the in- ;ner surfaces of the respective outer covering members and otherwise unconnected ;With each other. i I
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
