525121 A7 _______B7_ 五、發明説明(〗) 本發明係有關於電漿顯示裝置(PDP裝置)。尤其係有 關一種使用新方法而設有多數第四電極的電漿顯示裝置, 該等第四電極係曝露於一沿第一與第二電極等之相同方向 來延伸的放電空間内。 電衆顯示面板能具有優良的可見度,因其本身能發 光’並且較薄,而能被製成大螢幕及高速的顯示器。因此, 其乃具有吸引力來取代CRT顯示器。在一普通的pDp裝置 中’有η條X電極與“条丫電極會被相鄰排列,而形成^對的 X電極與Υ電極,並有爪條位址電極會被以垂直於X電極與 Υ電極的方向來列設。在完成一回復操作,而使整個表面 形成相同狀態之後,有一掃描脈衝會施加於γ電極。在施 加該掃描脈衝的同時,有一指示是否點亮的信號(數據信 號)會被施加於該Υ電極,一用來發光的顯示胞元會依據 該顯示信號而被選擇來設定成某一種狀態,且供持續放電 所須的電荷會被蓄貯在該電極上的介電層中。當一掃描脈 衝被連續地施於該γ電極時,即會進行上述的操作,而在 該螢幕整個表面上的全部顯示胞元皆會被設定成對應於該 顯示資料的狀態。此即為定址操作。在此狀態中,一持續 的脈衝會施於X電極與γ電極之間。雖一顯示胞元在定址 操作時其表面上有蓄貯電荷(稱為壁電荷)者,將會放電及 發光’因為該等電荷所形成的電壓會加諸於該持續脈衝 上’但其表面上未蓄貯電荷的顯示胞元,即使施以該持續 脈衝亦不會發光,因尚未達到放電的臨界點。此操作係稱 為持續操作’而被此操作所引發的放電稱為持續放電,其 4 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS) Α4規格(21〇χ297公楚) 525121
五、發明説明( 乃攸關顯示之發光❶該顯示即藉重複上述之操作而來形 成。該等X電極與γ電極則被稱為顯示電極。 在上述之正常的PDP裝置中,光會被發射來供每一對 X電極與Y電極之間的顯示,因此,η對的X電極與Y電極 乃須要形成η條顯示線。換言之,2η條顯示電極(γ電極與 X電極)即須要形成η條顯示線。 另一方面,輪流表面發光(以下簡稱ALIS)法的PDP裝 置已被揭露於ΕΡ 0762373 Α2專利案中,其中光會被發射 來供每一顯示電極之間的顯示。因該ALIS法的詳細構造 已被揭述於該專利中,故於此不再提供其詳細說明。 在該正常的PDP裝置與ALIS法的PDP裝置中,乃需要 改善發光效率來形成更高亮度的顯示。故本發明的第一目 的係為提供一種新構造而可改善該發光效率者。 雖已知增加各顯示電極之間的距離將能改善其發光 效率,但當該各顯示電極之間的距離增加時,則持續脈衝 的電壓必須提高,因為其開始放電之電壓亦相對提高。但 是,若持續脈衝的電壓提高,則可能又會發生反向隙縫放 電的問題,此將於後說明,其中不須要而發光放電的顯示 胞元將會增加。 另一方面,在該PDP裝置中乃須要不會失誤地產生持 續放電,因此,藉著如上所述地提高該持續脈衝的電壓並 同時擴大該第一脈衝的寬度,而可在該持續操作中不會失 誤地造成持續放電。但是,提高持續脈衝的電壓將會帶來 上述的問題,而擴大第一脈衝的寬度亦會造成另一問題, 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS) A4規格(210X297公釐) ....................…裝-.................訂..................線- (請先閲讀背面之注意事項再填寫本頁) 525121 A7 -__ _B7_ 五、發明説明(3 ) 即該持續操作所須的時間會隨之增加。因此,乃須要有一 種不會失誤地產生持續放電之構造,特別是須要一種,即 使i各顯示電極之間的距離增加時,亦能不必增加持續脈 衝的電壓,而能確保發生持績放電的構造。本發明之第二 目的即在提供一種新構造,其能不會失誤地產生持續放電 者。 又’在該回復操作中,藉著增加要被施於X電極之回 復脈衝的電壓及寬度,乃可不會失誤地造成該回復操作的 放電。但是,提高回復脈衝的電壓,將會帶來一問題,即 由於放電強度的增加會使對比變差,而該放電係與顯示無 關’因為由該回復脈衝所引起的放電無關於其顯示。此外, 若該回復或持續脈衝的第一脈衝之寬度被加寬時,亦會造 成回復所須時間亦隨之增加的問題。因此,乃需要另一種 在回復操作中能夠不會失誤地產生放電的方法。故本發明 的第三目的即在提供一種構造,其能回復操作中造成放電 而不會失誤者。 又在傳統的回復操作中,為了防止電荷分佈於電極 上的介電層中,故整個面板表面的電荷會被中和。但是, 其亦可以在整個表面上均勻地留下一定量的電荷,俾使後 續的定址操作更為容易,因此,乃須要一種簡單的回復操 作,其能夠被控制來留下一所需量的電荷。故本發明的第 四目的即在提供一種可行簡單回復操作的構造,其能被控 制而留下一所需量的電荷。 此外,在一正常的PDP裝置中,持續放電僅會發生於 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS) A4規格(210X297公爱) .6 525121 A7 _ B7 五、發明説明(4 ) * γ電極的一側與X電極之間,而在該Y電極的另一側與對 鄰的X電極之間(反向隙縫),乃藉著加寬其間的間隔,而 會被阻止發生持續放電。發生於該反向隙縫中的持續放電 、 係稱為反向隙縫放電。又,在正常的PDP裝置中,有一阻 . 光膜會被設於該Y電極的另一側與對鄰的X電極之間,因 此即使發生該反向隙縫放電,其顯示亦不受影樂0但是, 若該反向隙縫被加寬,致使無關於顯示的面積比率增加, 孀 > 則由該PDP裝置之提高清晰度的觀點論之,此乃是不可接 受的。故本發明的第五目的即在提供一種構造,其可抑止 反向隙縫放電的發生。 為能達成上述之第一至第五目的,本發明的電衆顯 _ 示裝置之特徵係在於:有多數的第四電極曝露於放電空間 内,而放電空間係以相同於第一X電極與第二γ電極的方 向來延伸。該第四電極的位置及施於第四電極的電壓,係 依據所要達成的目的或使用於該PDP裝置中的方法而有所 I, 不同。 例如為了達成上述第一及第二目的,該第四電極係 、 被設在第一與第二電極之間,即發生持續放電之處。為了 , 達成第一目的,有一介於施在第一電極及施在第二電極的 電壓之間的固定電壓,會被施於該第四電極,即該第一與 第二電極之間產生持續操作之處,而使該第一與第二電極 之間的電場變成一致。此將可改善發光效率。在此例中, 該第四電極乃形如一栅極。 為了達成該第二目的,當該第一交流脈衝被施於持 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS) A4規格(21〇><297公^ ........................裝------------------訂------------------線 (請先閲讀背面之注意事項再填辂本頁) 525121 五、發明説明(5 ) 續操作中時,有一會促成開始放電的脈衝將被施於該第四 電極,即在第一與第二電極之間進行持續操作之處。此脈 衝將會造成觸發放電,而在其後不會失誤地進行放電。 亦可以將分別達成第一目的與第二目的之兩種構造 合併。在此例中,該第四電極係被設在第一與第二電極之 間,持續放電發·生之處,而當該第一交流脈衝被施於持續 操作中時,一可促成開始放電的脈衝將會被施加,且使該 電場保持一致的電壓亦會於後施於該第四電極。 在正常的PDP裝置中,僅必須在第二電極的一側與第 一電極之間,進行持續操作之處來設置該第四電極,而不 必在該第二電極的另一側與對鄰的第一電極之間來設置。 因為相同的信號會被施於每一個第四電極,故該等第四電 極會被共同連接,並被設成能以單一的第四電極驅動電路 來驅動。 在MUS法的PDP裝置中,則必須將該等第四電極設 在該第二電極的一側與第一電極之間,及該第二電極的另 -側與對鄰的第-電極之間。且,該等第四電極會按排列 順序被分成第一組群、第二組群、第三組群及第四組群, 而每一組群中的第四電極會被設成,能各被以四個第四電 極驅動電路中之一者來獨立地驅動。#進行奇數場中的持 續操作時,前述用來達成第一與第二目的之電壓亦會被施 於第-與第三組群的第四電極,而當進行偶數場的持續操 作時,該電壓則會施於第二與第四組群的第四電極等。、 在AUS法的PDP裝置中,每一χ電極與γ電極之間的 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(5^規格(2Κ)Χ29_ (請先閲讀背面之*注意事項再填寫本頁)
五、發明説明(6 ) 距離係為相同的,因為該X電極與γ電極的每一線皆被作 為顯示線。因此,有-相同極性的電壓會被施於該形成未 用來顯示之一線的X電極與γ電極,以防止它們之間發生 放電。因此,必須將施於該第四電極兩側之第一與第二電 極的相同信號,施加於一些組群的第四電極上,而該等組 群係不同於在持續操作時為達成上述第一與第二目的之電 壓所施加的組群。換言之,當該持續操作進行於奇數場時,
與施於第四電極兩側之第-及第二電極相同的信號,會被 施於第二及第四組群的第四電極;而當持續操作進行於偶 數場時,該相同的信號則會被施於第一與第三組群的第四 電極等。
為了達成該第三與第四目的,有一固定電壓會被施 於相鄰的第四電極之間,以進行回復操作。由於必須在該 面板的整個表面上來進行該回復操作,故在本例中該等第 四電極會被設在每一條第一電極與第二電極之間,及被設 在最靠邊的第一或第二電極之外側。因為必須在每一相鄰 的第四電極之間施一固定電壓,故該等第四電極乃按排列 -人序交替地被分成二組群,而在各組群中之第四電極會被 以二個第四驅動電路中之一者,來獨立地驅動。因為該第 四電極係為曝露的,故即使施加一窄幅脈衝,其仍可能會 吸收該等壁電荷,而造成回復時間的縮短。其亦可藉控制 施加於第四電極之電壓及脈衝的寬度,而來容易地調整殘 留之壁電荷的量。 為了達成該第五目的,第四電極會被設在反向隙縫 525121 A7 ________ B7 五、發明説明(7 ) 中,即在正常PDP裝置中未進行持續操作之處,並有一電 壓會被施加俾在持續操作中防止該第一與第二電極之間發 生反向隙縫放電。其乃可將所有的第四電極共同連接,而 以單一的第四電極驅動電路來驅動它們。 為了實現本發明之各目的所設置之該等第四電極, 及施加於它們之電壓乃被說明如上,但亦可結合該等設計 與所施之電壓來同時達成多個目的。 圖式之簡單說明: 本發明將可由以下說明,配合所附圖式而更為清楚 地瞭解;其中: 第1圖為本發明第一實施例之PDP裝置整體構造的方 塊圖; 第2A及2B圖為第一實施例中電漿顯示面板的剖視 圖; 第3圖為在第一實施例之奇數場中的驅動波形示意 圖; 第4圖為在第一實施例之偶數場中的驅動波形示意 圖;及 第5圖為本發明第二實施例之PDP裝置整體構造的方 塊圖。 第1圖係示出本發明第一實施例之PDP裝置的整體構 造。在該第一實施例中,本發明係使用於ALIS法的PDP裝 置。因為該ALIS法的PDP裝置已被揭露於第2801893號曰 本專利中,故不再於此提供其詳細說明,而僅描述有關於 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS) A4規格(210X297公釐) -10 - 525121 A7 B7 五、發明説明(8 ) 本發明之特徵的部份。 如第1圖所示,在該ALIS法的電漿顯示面板(PDP)IO 中,有η條Y電極(第二電極)及n+1條X電極(第一電極)會被 交替相鄰地間設排列,而在第一顧示電極(Y電極與X電極) 之間將會發光來供顯示。因此,2n條顯示線會被以(2n+l) 條顯示電極來形成。換言之,在該ALIS法中,以相同數目的 顯示電極將能夠得到兩倍於傳統PDP裝置的清晰度。而且, 其顯示空間能夠不浪費地利用,且被例如電極所阻擋的光量 會較少,因此,乃可得到較大的開孔率,而獲致一高亮度。 奇數的X電極與偶數的X電極會被共同連接,該等奇 數的X電極會被一奇數X驅動電極26來驅動,而偶數的X 電極等,則會被一偶數X驅動電路27來驅動。該等Y電極 會被一 Y掃描驅動器23所駆動。該Y掃描驅動器23包含一 移位暫存器231及一驅動電路232。在定址操作中,由該移 位暫存器231所產生的掃描脈衝會被該驅動電路232不斷地 施於Y電極,或者由一奇數Y持續電路24所產生的信號會 施於奇數的Y電極。而由一偶數Y持續電路25所產生的信 號會施於偶數的Y電極。一定址驅動器22會施一數據信號 於該等位址電極,而在定址操作中與該掃描脈衝同步進 行。有一控制器21會產生一控制信號來控制前述之各電路。 上述的構造係與在ALIS法之習知的PDP裝置中者相同。 在該第一實施例的PDP10中,除了上述的構造之外, 尚有第四電極(TGE電極)等被設在每一 X電極與Y電極之 間,及在兩側之最靠邊的X電極之外側。該等TGE電極係 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS) A4規格(210X297公釐) 11 .....—^---------------i、T---------------緣 (請先閲讀背面之注意事項再填窝本頁) 525121 A7 B7 五、發明説明(9 ) 沿所示之X電極與Y電極相同的方向延伸,而被按序分成 四組群。即,屬於TGEA-1電極組群的第n(n為一整數)TGE •電極,乃共同連接於一 TGEA-1驅動電路28。屬於TGEB-1 電極組群的第(n+l)TGE電極,係共同連接於一 TGEB-1驅 動電路30。屬於TGEA-2電極組群的第(n+2)TEG電極,係 共同連接於一 TGEA-2驅動電路29。屬於TGEB-2電極組群 之第(n+3)TGE電極,則共同連接於一 TGEB-2驅動電路 31° 第2A圖係為第一實施例中之該PDP 10的剖視圖,而 第2B圖則示出其如何組合。如第2A圖所示,多數對應於 X及Y電極之透明電極13,及設在其上之金屬電極12所構 成的顯示電極等,乃被設在一玻璃基板11上,並被一介電 層14所覆蓋。在另一玻璃基板19上,則設有一位址電極18, 及一介電層17覆蓋該位址電極18。該二基板係以一定的距 離互相分開對設,並於其間的空間16内封裝放電氣體。此 空間即為放電空間。在該第一實施例中,TGE電極15等係 被曝露於該放電空間16内,而被設在介電層14上的相鄰顯 示電極之間的中間處。該TGE電極15係由金屬層製成。 如第2B圖所示,有一分隔壁20被設在基板19之介電 層17上的位址電極18中間,以防止放電沿著橫向(即X與Y 電極延伸的方向)擴散。在習知的面板中,該介電層14具 有一平坦面,而被設成使該分隔壁20能接觸該介電層14的 表面。但在該第一實施例中,因有TGE電極15被設在介電 層14的表面上,故若如與分隔壁20對設,則分隔壁20將會 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS) A4規格(210X297公釐) _ 12 525121 A7 ______B7 五、發明説明(l〇 )
抵觸該等TGE電極15,而在分隔壁2〇與介電層14的表面之 間產生一間隙。假若存有該間隙,則放電將可能沿著橫向 來擴散。因此,在該第一實施例中,如第2B囷所示,有 一溝槽201會被設在該分隔壁2〇橫交tge電極15之處,而 使該分隔壁20能與介電層14及TGE電極15的表面完全密合 地觸接’沒有留下任何空隙。若不在該分隔壁2〇上設置溝 槽201,則亦可在該介電層14的表面上形成溝槽,並將tgE # 電極設於其中。 第3及4圖乃示出在該第一實施例中之Pdp裝置的驅動 波形;第3圖示出在奇數場中的波形,而第4圖示出在偶數 場中的波形。於該ALIS法的PDP裝置中,每一顯示電極之 - 間的空間係皆可供放電以作顯示之用,但其不可能使該等 • 放電在同時來發生。因此,將會進行所謂的隔行掃描,而 使顯示的時間會被奇數線及偶數線等所分占。在奇數場 中’其顯示係由該等奇數顯示線來形成,而在偶數場中, 其顯示則由偶數顯示線等來形成,因此結合在奇數場與偶 數%中的顯示’乃可產生整艘的顯示。 、 於該回復操作中,如第3圓所示,當相同的電壓(接地 • 電平G)施於該X、Y及位址電極等之後,有一正脈衝(例如 大約+150V)會被施於該等TGEA-1及TGEA-2電極(全部的 TGEA電極),並有一負脈衝(例如大約-150V)會被施於該 等TGEB-1及TGEB-2電極(全部的TGEB電極),嗣壁電荷會 被其間所生成的電場所吸收而消失。在該等TGEA電極與 TGEB電極之間施加該一電壓,將會造成放電,但該等放 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(GNS) A4規格(210X297公釐) 13 ..... ...... 裝·...... ......、可------------------線. 五、發明説明(11 ) 電並不一定需要,而重要的是吸收消除該等壁電荷。於另 一種方法中,由於壁電荷可在該實施例中之曝露的電極之 間施一電壓而被吸收,故其乃可利用一小強度的放電或不 同任何放電,及一可被抑制之與顯示無關的放電,來消除 S亥等壁電荷,而造成對比的改善。其亦可藉調整施加於該 等TGEA電極與TGEB電極之間的電壓及脈衝寬度,來留 下適量的壁電荷,而不將之全部消除。假使該等TGE A電 極與TEGB電極係被作為觸發器或柵極,此將於後說明, 而非被用來進行回復操作,則該回復操作可如習知的方式. 來進行,且在該情況下,該等TGEA電極與TGEB電極會 被設為接地電平或一高阻抗的狀態。 在該奇數場的持續操作中,有一持續放電會發生於 奇數的X電極與Y電極之間,以及偶數的X電極與γ電極之 間。因此,一相反極性的持續脈衝會被施於一對奇數的X 電極與偶數的Y電極,以及一對奇數的Y電極與偶數的X 電極。於該定址操作中,負壁電荷會被生成於用來發光之 顯示胞元的X電極上,而正壁電荷會被生成於γ電極上。 因此,在用來發光的顯示胞元上,由該等負壁電荷所形成 的電壓會疊加在施於XI電極(奇數的X電極)之負脈衝Xla 上’而由該等正璧電荷所形成的電壓則會疊加在施於Y1 電極(奇數的Y電極)之正脈衝Yla上,結果,在該XI電極 與Y1電極之間的電壓會變得夠大而足以產生一持續放 電。但是,至於該等X2電極(偶數的X電極)與Y2電極(偶數的 Y電極),則如此生成的壁電荷對脈衝X2a及Y2a的影響會減 14 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS) A4規格(210X 297公釐) 525121 A7 ____ B7_ 五、發明説明(12 ) 少’而不能產生持續放電。當該負脈衝X2b施於該χ2電極, 且負脈衝Y2b施於Y2電極時,則會發生持續放電。在本發 明中,該等脈衝乃被稱為持續脈衝的第一脈衝。由於在該 第一持續放電時,壁電荷會移動於X1電極與¥1電極之間, 故當正脈衝Xlb施於XI電極具負脈衝Ylb施於¥1電極時, 持續放電即會發生。此等操作乃相同於在習知ALIS法中 的狀況。 在該第一實施例的PDP裝置中,當負脈衝xia施於X1 電極,且正脈衝Yla施於Yi電極,而使該第一持續放電發 生於XI電極與Y1電極之間時,該正脈衝Ta會被施於其間 的TGEB-1電極上。此將會在該tgEB-Ι電極與XI電極之間 造成電壓差,XI上將會被蓄貯負壁電荷(電子)並被施加該 負脈衝Xla,而增加放電且更容易發生放電,因此,能夠 不會失敗地造成放電。一旦發生放電時,電荷全生成於該 放電空間中,且該等電荷會形成觸發器而可在X1電極與γι 電極之間造成正常的持續放電。如上所述,乃可在幻電 極與Y1電極之間確保第一持續放電的發生。 此外,當該負脈衝X2b施於X2電極,且正脈衝Y2b施 於Y2電極,而使第一持續放電產生於χ2電極與γ2電極之 間時’該正脈衝Tb會被施於其間的TGEB-2電極上。此將 會造成TGEB-2電極與X2電極之間的電壓差,X2上將會被 蓄貯負壁電荷(電子)並施加該負脈衝X2b,而增加放電且 令其更容易地發生,因此,乃能確保發生放電。一旦發生 放電’電荷會被生成於放電空間内,且該等電荷會形如一 15 本紙張尺度適用中國國家標準(CNS) A4規格(210X297公I) 525121 A7 ____B7_ 五、發明説明(13 ) 觸發器而在X2電極與Y2電極之間造成正常的持續放電。 如上所述,該第一持續放電乃可確保會發生於X2電極與Y2 電極之間。 在產生第一持續放電之後的持續操作中,有一電壓VG 係介於在持續操作時施於X電極之電壓與施於γ電極的電 壓(例如+80V及-80V)之間,將會被施於該等TGEB-1與 TGEB-2電極上。該等持續放電係會發生於正在tgEB-Ι電 極或TGEB-2電極上方的放電空間内。藉施加該電壓vg於 TGEB -1電極或TGEB-2電極,貝,J在兩側由X電極與γ電極 所形成之電場的差異將會被補償,故其發光效率乃得以改 善。當不必補償電場的差異時,該電壓VG乃可為接地電 平,或形成高阻抗狀態。 又,其亦得以該電壓VG取代觸發脈衝,而來施加於 持續操作中或形成高阻抗狀態的TGEB-1電極與TGEB-2電 極0 由於相同極性的持續脈衝被施於持續操作中的TGEB-1電極與TGEB-2電極兩側的X電極及Y電極上,故該相同 極性的持續脈衝會被施於該TGEA-1電極與TGEA-2電極兩 側的X及Y電極上,而來防止錯誤的放電。此外,由於該 相同極性的持續脈衝會被施於兩側的X電極與γ電極,故 即使一稍微不同電壓的脈衝被施於該TGEA-1電極與 TGEA-2電極時,亦不會發生放電,因此該接地電平〇乃 可被施加,或可形成高阻抗狀態。 如第4圖所示,在偶數場的回復操作中,乃類似於奇
