Abstract

A process for preparing an aluminum-hydrogen-oxygen complex e.g. Al12(H2O2)18H6 capable of releasing oxygen and hydrogen in the presence of a halogen compound, when added to a fluid which contains oxygen and hydrogen comprises (1) contacting aluminum metal which contains at least trace amounts of silicon with an acid, at such concentration that the acid both removes and inhibits formation of oxide on the metal, (b) contacting the thus treated metal with a source of mercury in an oxygen-containing atmosphere such as air, (c) partially immersing the mercury contacted aluminum in hydrogen halide acid solution for sufficient time to begin the formation of a complex on the mercury-contacted aluminum. Also disclosed is a further process for preparing an aluminum-hydrogen-oxygen complex in suspension by (a) at least partially redissolving the complex in a hydrogen halide acid solution to form a suspension; and (b) cooling the suspension; and (c) increasing the pH of the suspension to form about 5.0 to about 5.8. The complex is used for the treatment of acne, perspiration, sewage and as a depilatory.
