Abstract

1316581 Aluminium-oxygen complex G G MERKL 11 April 1970 58310/69 Heading ClA A method for preparing an aluminium-oxygen complex containing an excess of oxygen over the normal ratio of 3 atoms of oxygen to 2 atoms of aluminium found in the common aluminium oxide Al 2 O 3 comprises reacting at a temperature below 150‹ F. aluminium metal containing not more than 5% by weight of other impurities with aqueous hydrochloric acid in the presence of mercury and an oxygen-containing atmosphere which contacts a part of the aluminium metal or a part of the aluminium metal permeated by the mercury, whereby the complex forms on the surface of the aluminium metal or mercury-permeated aluminium metal exposed to the atmosphere. In one procedure a rod of aluminium freed of surface oxide and wetted with mercury is allowed to stand or float in mercury with the portion above the mercury almost covered by dilute hydrochloric acid except for a portion at the top which will be wet, but stick into the air. Caesium, vanadium, zirconium, thorium, lanthanum, hafnium, titanium, thallium, palladium and niobium promote the reaction. The reaction is also assisted by U.V. radiation, preferably of 1000 Š. Mercury compounds which liberate elemental mercury under the reaction conditions may be used as the mercury source. Aluminium, after removal of surface oxide, may be shaken with mercuric oxide until it coats the piece of aluminium, and the HgO decomposes to Hg and oxygen. Mercuric chloride or sulphate can also be used.
