Abstract
1423714 Aluminium complex G G MERKL 27 March 1973 14772/73 Addition to 1316581 Heading C1A A method of preparing an aluminium complex of formula Al 12 (H 2 O 2 ) 18 H 6 comprising reacting aluminium, of purity at least 99À9% by wt., at a temperature below 66 C. with a source of hydrogen ions other than aqueous hydrochloric acid in the presence of Hg or a Hg compound and in an oxygen containing atmosphere which contacts part of the Al metal, or part of the aluminium metal permeated by Hg, whereby the complex forms on the surface of the aluminium exposed to the oxygen containing atmosphere. In an example the aluminium rod is placed in a pool of mercury so that the lower half of the rod is covered and then a thin layer of aqueous sulphuric acid (0À1-3N) is formed on the mercury so that the aluminium rod is contacted but not covered. The complex forms on that part of the aluminium rod which is exposed to air. Other acids which can be used are HBr, HI, acetic and formic acids, or alternatively hot water. Mercuric oxide can also be used to coat the aluminium rod in place of using liquid mercury.
