Abstract

1467795 Purifying sulphuric acid WACKERCHEMIE GmbH 27 Jan 1976 [29 Jan 1975] 03076/76 Heading C1A Sulphuric acid contaminated by methyl sulphuric acid is purified by diluting the contaminated acid with 10-25% by weight with liquid water based on the content of H 2 SO 4 so that diluted acid has a strength not less than 60% weight, subsequently passing steam at 95-150‹ C. through the acid such that the temperature thereof rises to 170-180‹ C. and distilling of the methanol so formed. The amount of water added is advantageously 15-20%. The contaminated acid is preferably at 90-110‹ C. immediately prior to the introduction of steam. The process is preferably carried out at atmospheric pressure, but higher or lower pressures may be used. The process may be continuous, semicontinuous or batch.
