Abstract

Alumina of higher than average pore size and high surface area, above 50 diameter and 300 square metres/gram respectively, is prepared by treating aluminium amalgam with an aqueous medium containing an organic colloid at above 80 DEG C., separating the hydrated alumina so formed and calcining it at a temperature below that at which a -alumina is formed. The colloid may be tannic acid or starch in amounts up to 2.5 per cent by weight of the aqueous medium, which is preferably water and may contain catalyst components. In an example small pieces of high-purity aluminium were immersed in 0.1 N HCl for 3 hours and then an equal weight of mercury was added. After 1 hour excess mercury and acid were decanted off, the amalgam rinsed with water, and then reacted with 0.5 per cent w/w aqueous tannic acid or starch at 95 DEG C. The alumina hydrate was dried and calcined at 550 DEG C. for two hours. Average pore diameters ranging from 66 to 78 and specific surface areas from 300 m2/g to 366 m2/g were obtained. Specifications 815,512 and 815,514 are referred to.
