Abstract

1463005 Modified alumina G G MERKL 30 Jan 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 4406/74 Heading C1A A hydroperoxy group containing Al product is made by reacting at 25‹ C. or below (i) an activated Al comprising Al of at least 99À9% purity which has been permeated with Hg, Ga or In-Ga alloy in the presence of H<SP>+</SP> ions with (ii) a reactant liquid comprising H 2 O 2 in a liquid organic compound having no multiple carboncarbon bonds, e.g. alcohol, ketone, aldehyde and containing no more than 10% water. The reactant liquid may contain a minor amount of metal or metal salt or oxide to give a coloured product or with a catalytically active component, e.g. Pt, to give a catalyst for treating car exhausts. When the product is fired at elevated temperature, e.g. above 2000‹ C., a product hypothesised to have sapphire structure is formed which may be used as a synthetic glass or ceramic.
