Abstract

1494314 Mordenite preparation SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 2 Jan 1975 [3 Jan 1974] 00277/74 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions B1 and C5] The preparation of mordenite in the hydrogen form comprises treating mordenite with an aqueous solution containing an acid of normality from 0À5 to 3À0, and sodium ions or potassium ions in a quantity (in gl.<SP>-1</SP>) which amounts to at least ten times the normality of the aqueous acid solution, treating with an aqueous ammonium solution, and then calcining the ammonium mordenite. The acid treatment preferably uses an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid containing sodium ions, performed at the boiling point of the aqueous acid solution. The ammonium compound (e.g. NH 4 NO 3 ) is preferably in aqueous solution of concentration 0À1-10À0 N. The acid treatment and/or the ammonium compound treatment may be repeated several times and the calcination is preferably performed at 450-550‹ C. Mordenite in the hydrogen form is suitable as a carrier for group VIII noble metal catalysts for the isomerization of normal paraffins.
