Abstract

a -Alumina is prepared by exposing amalgamated aluminium to oxygen and water vapour, removing the hydrated alumina formed, dehydrating by heating to form g -alumina, and converting the g -alumina to a -alumina by further heating, preferably in an oxidizing atmosphere. The formation of g -alumina is preferably effected at 1000 DEG to 1100 DEG C., and the conversion to a -alumina at 1400 DEG to 1600 DEG C. To remove coarse particles, the g -alumina may be sieved or subjected to aeroflotation. The aluminium body may be amalgamated by contacting with a mercuric salt solution, for example the chloride or cyanide, after which the body is rinsed and dried. The amalgamated body may then be contacted with a stream of air containing water vapour, preferably at a temperature of 25 DEG to 75 DEG C.-The body may be in the form of a block through which holes are bored, a liquid coolant passing either through these holes or through pipes which are inserted in these holes. The alpha alumina product may be ground in a ball mill, and may be used for making ceramic articles, for example metal cutting tools or wire-drawing dies. The particle size of the a -alumina is preferably below 10 microns, with an average particle size of 1 micron or less.
