Abstract
The hydrodynamic torque converter comprises a casing (5) which can be driven in rotation about an axis (3), forms a converter space (7) and in which is arranged a pump impeller (9) rigidly connected to the casing (5). A turbine wheel (11) which is arranged in the converter space (7), coaxially to the pump impeller (9), and can be rotated relative to the latter can be coupled to the casing (5) by means of a controllable lock-up clutch (21). The lock-up clutch (21) is operated by an annular piston (23) which, on its side remote from the converter space (7), forms with the casing (5) a pressure space (27) and, on its side facing the converter space (7), is subjected to the fluid pressure in the converter space (7). In order to prevent delays in the operation of the lock-up clutch (21) due to air which has penetrated into the pressure space (27), the pressure space (27) is connected, preferably to the converter space (7), via a vent conduit (55). The vent conduit (55) contains a normally open valve (57) which closes when the pressure space (27) is subjected to pressure and preferably passes through the annular piston (23). <IMAGE>
