Abstract

A press for dewatering fibrous webs (24) comprises an extended press nip formed by a roll (12) and an endless belt (16) forced towards the roll (12) by a pressure shoe (14) so that a pair of absorbent felts (26, 27) which carry the fibrous web (24) sandwiched between them are squeezed as they travel through the nip with the belt (16). The belt has a uniform smooth impervious surface which is engaged by the pressure shoe (14) and comprises a base fabric impregnated with a polymeric material. The base fabric is sufficiently open for impregnation to be effected without the formation of voids. <IMAGE>
