Abstract
An apparatus for burning solid fuels, such as peat, which produce ash with low melting or vitrifying temperatures, includes a boiler (2) and a separate hearth (3) which has a fire grate (5) for a fire (6) and which is connected to a fuel store (4) for the supply of controlled amounts of fuel to the fire (6) dependent on how much heat the boiler (2) requires. The hearth's (3) requirement for air is provided by an air supply duct (14). The smoke and gas, generated by the fire (6) in the hearth (3), are passed first through an initial gas duct (19) to the boiler (2), where their heat content is largely extracted, then passed on via a gas duct (20) to an outlet in the form of a chimney (21). In between the said gas duct (20) and a duct (29) for the supply of oxygen-rich fresh air to the said air supply duct (14), there is a return duct (33), which when required, returns low-oxygen or inert gases passed through the boiler, to the hearth (3) and thereby reduces the proportion of oxygen in the air supply to the hearth, and as a consequence thereof, maintains the fire's (6) temperature below the value at which the ash from the fire melts or vitrifies.<IMAGE>
