Abstract

1468489 Differential control EATON CORP 22 July 1975 [30 July 1974] 30520/75 Heading F2D A positive lock clutch 87, for an inter-axle differential gear of a motor vehicle, is engaged automatically when differential speed exceeds a predetermined limit, by an electronic circuit responding to sensors 101, 103, comprising magnetic proximity pick-ups generating currents 111, 113 at frequencies dependent on the speeds of the input member 41 and one 47 of the output members of the differential gear. The currents 111, 113 are shaped at 141, 143, and at 145, 147 are converted to speed-responsive voltages, which are compared in a differential amplifier 151 receiving also an input C from a bias circuit 153 which generates upper and lower reference voltages determining the limits of permitted differential speeds. These upper and lower limits are compared with the differential speed in respective voltage comparators 155, which, when the limits are exceeded, issue a signal through a timer 159 to a driver 161, energizing a solenoid valve to supply compressed air to a spring-loaded piston (123) engaging the differential lock clutch. The timer 159 sets a time limit of 10 or 20 seconds on the lock, which would otherwise receive the release signal in response to locking. The differential gear comprises an input spider 41 driven by an input shaft 21, a sidewheel 51 splined on an aligned output shaft 17 driving a parallel axle, not shown, and a sidewheel 47, driving, through a meshed wheel 59, an input bevel pinion 69 of an axle-driving differential 75. The lock clutch 87 connects the input shaft 21 to the side-wheel 47.
