Abstract

Weather resistant aminoplastic adhesives and binders for wood contg. 1 mol. melamine or a mixt. of at least 15 mol. % melamine and not more than 85 mol. % urea, 1.7-3.0 mol formaldehyde and 0.05-0.2 mol of a phenol, are made by condensing 1 mol melamine and/or melamine and/or urea mixture and 1.5-2.5 mol formaldehyde in aqs. soln. to a water tolerance of 0.5-0 (esp. 1.5.2.5), and condensing the product at pH 7.5-10 and 45-100 degrees C with 0.05-0.2 mol of a phenol and opt. 0.5 mol formaldehyde and 0.5 mol melamine until the aqs. soln. has a viscosity of 300-200 cP (esp. 700-900 cP) at 20 degrees C and 63% solids content. - Products may be hot or cold cured; in the latter case the hardener is pref. formic acid. - Suitable compsn. s 100 pts. resin (58-63% solids), 1-8 pts. HCOOH and 1020 pts. of an extender such as coconut shell flour. - Products are useful as adhesives for wood and binders for chipboard.
