Abstract

Melamine or phenolic resins with good flow properties containing cocondensed diols. Nl-. Are made by condensing melamine or phenol with formaldehyde in the pres. of 1-30% (esp. 5-20%) (on resin solids) of diols HO-R-O-R-OH (I) where R = opt. branched C2-4 alkylene grp., in neutral or alkaline soln. The components may be condensed using 1:1,3-2.8 M/F or 1:1,5-2.8 P/F ratio, and the (I) added at a point between the start of the condensation and the hydrophobe point. Suitable plasticisers (I) are diethylene glycol, dipropylene glycol and dibutylene glycol. Products are internally plasticised resins with improved flow, good transparency, fast cure and resistance to water in the cured state. They are useful as coating resins with high build and (esp). for impregnation of decorative and overlay foils for laminates, surfaced chipboard, etc.
