Abstract

1,195,732. Plywood. WEYERHAEUSER CO. 23 June, 1967 [15 Aug., 1966], No. 29171/67. Heading B5L. [Also in Division C3] Wood veneers are laminated by (a) heating a surface thereof to a temp. not exceeding 400‹ F. (205‹ C.), (b) applying an adhesive to the surface and (c) pressing the veneers together until the adhesive is cured, the adhesive comprising 3 components: (i) over 50% of a phenol-formaldehyde resin having a molar ratio of formaldehyde to phenol between 1À5 to 1 and 2À8 to 1 and containing no free aldehyde, (ii) a condensate of phenol, formaldehyde and a polyhydric phenol having a molar ratio of formaldehyde to total phenol between 0À4 to 1 and 0À8 to 1 and a molar ratio of phenol to polyhydric phenol not exceeding 2 to 1 and containing no free aldehyde and (iii) a source of aldehyde. Component (i) may be prepared by heating the reactants in an aqueous medium, under reflux and in the presence of NaOH as catalyst until a viscosity between 400 and 15,000 centistokes is reached. In component (ii) the polyhydric phenol may be resorcinol or a mixture of polynuclear polyhydric phenols which may also contain some dihydroxy benzenes. Component (ii) may be prepared by heating phenol, and flaked paraformaldehyde in an aqueous medium, and in the presence of NaOH or Cu acetate as catalyst until a viscosity between 75 and 15,000 centistokes is reached and then adding the polyhydric phenol and further heating to a viscosity between 100 and 2000 centistokes.
