Abstract
1,154,515. Electron multipliers; image converter tubes. MULLARD Ltd. 12 March, 1968 [15 May, 1967], No. 22339/67. Heading H1D. In a channel intensifier device as described in Specification 1,090,406, the photo-emissive surface areas, in addition to being in contact with the input electrode of the device, are arranged in such manner as to lie across and effectively close the entrances to the channels of the device while being adapted to receive radiation from the side remote from the input electrode and to emit photo-electrons from the side facing the channel entrances. The input electrode may be extended some way into each channel to provide a lens effect or the channels may be tilted. In either event the photo-electrons are directed to the channel walls at an early stage. These two arrangements may be combined. In the figure shown where P is the photo-emissive layer and E1 the input electrode the lenses formed by the penetrating parts of the input electrode are tilted. The parts of the photo-emissive layer P which corresponds to the input electrode E1 may be omitted and in another alternative the photo-emissive layer may constitute the input electrode. The photoemissive layer may be provided on a glass plate which may be the window of the tube. A combined photo-emissive layer and input electrode may be a gold layer, e.g. in an ultra-violet image intensifier. The entrances to the channels may be outwardly flared or tapered.
