Abstract

A photomultiplier comprises a focusing electrode arrangement 3, 4 between the photocathode 2 and the first dynode 9 so designed and operated that the paths of photo-electrons emanating from parts of the envelope wall not occupied by the photocathode or from the focusing electrode arrangement either cannot pass through the aperture in the electrode 4 or pass through only after the photo-electrons from the photocathode, and regions of the envelope wall which can be irradiated by light passing through the photocathode being provided with photoelectrically ineffective material, e.g. gold, which can be deposited prior to the provision of the photocathode. The photocathode is deposited by means of evaporators disposed behind masking diaphragms.
