Abstract

1,221,273. Colour television tubes. ZENITH RADIO CORP. 18 Sept., 1969 [24 Oct., 1968], No. 46126/69. Heading HID. A shadow mask 31 for a colour television tube is provided with an adjacent mesh electrode 32 having interstitial dimensions small compared with the aperture dimensions of the mask, the two electrodes being separately energized to form a lens focusing the beam or beams on to the fluorescent screen. In Fig. 2 the mask 31 is coated with insulation 33 which may be aluminium oxide formed by anodizing if the mask is of aluminium or aluminium-coated steel, and the insulation is coated with a semiconductor 34 such as chrome oxide to prevent charges accumulating on it. The electrode 32 may be a woven, knitted, expanded metal or electro-formed mesh and is secured to the layer 34 by means of an adhesive. In an alternative construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), insulation such as silicon dioxide or nitride is applied to one surface of the mesh 32 which is then secured by an adhesive directly to the mask 31 without the intervening layers 33 and 34. The mask is mounted in the tube with the mesh 32 facing the electron beams and electrically connected to a wall coating on the cone of the tube; the mask itself is electrically connected to a wall coating on the face panel of the tube, possibly through the usual support means. In operation the mesh may be maintained at 25 Kv. and the mask at 24-8 Kv., the lower potential of the mask and screen ensuring that any secondary emission is directed away from the screen. The arrangement described constitutes a two-element lens for focusing the beam or beams on the screen; a three-element lens may be formed by providing another mesh electrode on the opposite side of the mask.
