Abstract
1,135,720. Centrifugal separator. BIRD MACHINE CO. 30 Oct., 1967 [9 Nov., 1966], No. 49251/67. Heading B2P. In a screw centrifuge slurry to be treated is fed through a pipe 34 into a main feed compartment 56 formed inside the screw conveyor hub 19 and separated by means of a splash baffle 52 from a secondary feed compartment 58 in which is located a chamber 64 which receives a secondary fluid, e.g. flocculant or wash water, fed through a pipe 40 surrounding the pipe 34. The slurry enters into the interior of the bowl 10 through openings 62 in the hub 19 and the slurry does so through one or more pipes 80 extending radially through enlarged holes 82 in the hub. Any slurry that splashes from compartment 56 through an opening 60 in the baffle 52 tends to be thrown radially outwardly, to enter the flow space between the wall 68 of the chamber 64 and the hub 19, and to pass into the bowl 10 through the holes 82. The chamber 64 has a frusto-conical wall 70 and a sleeve portion 72 which effectively prevent the slurry from entering the chamber. The solids separated by centrifugal force are moved along the wall of the bowl by the screw conveyor 17 toward and out through openings 85 into a solids discharge chamber 84. The separated liquid enters through openings 50 into a hub enlargement 48 to be scooped up by a skimmer 46 at the forward end of a liquid effluent pipe 42 which is eccentrically mounted for rotation on the pipe 40.
