Abstract

1,164,411. Cleaning centrifuges. WESTFALIA SEPARATOR A.G. 29 Jan., 1968 [9 Feb., 1967], No. 4452/68. Heading B2P. A centrifuge having a solids collector 9 adjacent the base of the centrifuging drum 1 is cleaned by feeding a flushing medium, e.g. hot water or vapour, into the -drum and supplying a cooling liquid to the gap 11 between the drum and the. collector. With this arrangement, vapours which are likely to pass through the gap 11 and into the ball bearings 21, 22 and the drive 23 are condensed by the cooling liquid and thrown therewith by the rotating drum into the collector 9 from which they are discharged together. The centrifuge may be of the conical-plate type as shown having a feed inlet pipe 15, a liquid outlet 19 and solids discharge conduits 7 leading to ejection nozzles 8. The flushing medium is introduced into the drum after a centrifuging operation by connecting the pipe 15 to a flushing medium line 18 by means of a three-way valve 16. The medium discharges from the drum partly through the outlet 19 into the liquid collector 20 and partly through the nozzles 8 into the solids collector 9. Cooling liquid is fed via a connector 13 and a tap 14 to an annular distributor tube 12 provided on its periphery with bores 12a which are aligned with corresponding bores or notches which are provided in the base 10 of the collector 9 and which open out into the gap 11.
