Se obtin sulfonati de petrol prin contactarea bioxidului de sulf cu o hidrocarbura cu o greutate moleculara de 200...1000 cu un continut de 10....95% în greutate hidrocarburi aromatice, gasita într-un amestec ales dintre titei desbenzinat si amestecuri ale acestora la temperatura de 27...120 degree C, presiune de 0,01...150 at, raportul reactantilor fiind de 1:3,3...20 introducînd în amestecul de reactie 0,1...3 parti în greutate apa pentru o parte amestec sulfonat, separîndu-se o faza organica de produs sulfonat cu continut de 5...15% hidrocarburi nereactionate care este neutralizata cu o baza monovalenta separîndu-se hidrocarburile nereactionate prin decantare de produsul sulfonat.
